I went to the Spez store this morning and they had a 2016 Stumpy 6fattie that I could look at. Man that thing looks nice, the 150mm travel up front looks badass.

My heart says buy the Stumpy, but the logical thinker tells me that the Merida makes more sense in terms of it having 2x11 (I rode 2x10 so I think I'm just in the comfort zone there), The Merida is also new, but I will be buying the Stumpy from a bike shop.

BUY THE STUMPY!!!!!

Seriously - 1x11 / 1x12 is absolutely fine for the majority of people. Ask if you can swap the wheels for a set of niner wheels. You'll not have a problem fitting 2.35/2.5's in there.

Cool thanks. You convinced me. I'm buying second hand from a bike shop so I don't think They'd be too keen on doing that.

Honestly the Merida is a better bike. And buying a bike that you need to spend money on from the get go is a pain. Having a warranty is also huge IMO.

The 120 800 Merida is serious value for money with modern geo and very favourable reviews.

I had a demo 6fattie and did not get along with the wheels at all! Tire roll to face plant

I had a 6fattie stumpy on test for a very short time.

I'm also not a fan of the 6fattie size. I found there was rebound in the tire that I didn't enjoy. Balancing tire roll with unwanted tire rebound seemed like a lot of admin to me and detracted from what was clearly a very good bike. If it was fitted with 29er wheels. Different story.

That is why I'm struggling to decide what to get. both have their strong points that make them great bikes. I demoed 27.5+ bike the other day and actually enjoyed the plus tires.

The geometry for the two bikes is very similar. For me, at the end of the day the Stumpy is tried and tested to be a good all-rounder and it seems to be favoured by quite a few.

Get a second hand Camber  Best bike I've ever ridden and the Stumpy would be next up.The Stumpy climbs extremely well for a long travel trail bike.

At this price point, a decent camber is as scarce as hen's teeth. There are a few Cambers for sale, but the carbon ones are expensive and the lower spec models will require me spending additional money on the bike.

Agreed, even Spez 2.6 tyres give me the heebie jeebies. If you're going to plod along and like the security that a 2.8 tyre gives in the grip department by all means. But, as you start riding faster and your confidence increases the limitations will become apparent pretty quickly...
