Budget cable and housing cutter

I need a cable and housing cutter that won't break the bank.

I'm hoping to spend something less than R300.

Can anyone suggest a shop that has a cable cutter that's not Park Tool?

I'm based in Gauteng and need it before Sunday, so can't ship from anywhere.

Also wondering if getting something from a hardware store is good enough, or if that's too cheapskate.

Just go to any hardware store and buy a good cable cutter. Cheap ones can be had for less than R300 (something like Grip) - but I wouldn't advise it, they go blunt pretty fast unless you are only ocassionaly using it. I bought a Stanley one for R400, which is by no means top of the line, but it's robust and has stayed lekker sharp for quite a long time now - one of the tools I use way more than I thought I would!

Oh, on Park Tool, for any bike specific tool I will more than happily shell out for blue - they make some quality stuff. But for anything else - quality tools can be had at half the price of Park Tool.

That said, in a perfect world I wouldn't mind one of those nice instagram worthy tool walls with all the blue bits and bobs.

Okay great. So you reckon a decent cable cutter from a hardware store will be able to chop through the cable housings too?

Is there any particular style/type/shape of tool I should be looking for? I don't know much about cable cutters, so I don't know if there's certain types that would be better at the purpose I need it for.

I bought mine from an electrical wholesaler up the road from work. No idea what brand but it has an orange handle (I bought the side cutters as well). Both of which have served me well.

They were excellent for the first few months and then I started to use them for cutting other things. At present they are great for cutting electrical cables and trimming back insulation etc but you'd get a better finish on a gear cable cut with a 4 pound and an anvil...

I suppose if they are bought for cutting bicycle cables only and kept away from other jobs then they will be great for DIY bike mech.

Icetoolz makes a lekker one, I got mine from CWC. Was R180 about 2 yes back.

Just don't waste your time with side cutters. Get some half decent cable cutters and you will be wondering why you let yourself struggle for so long before.

Yup, the Stanley one I've got cuts it really cleanly. I have even on ocassion used some heavy duty side cutters which work just as well.

Cable cutters:

I had one of those Builders warehouse specials and it was utter crap.

Paid R100 for a Raleigh pair. Works perfect. Cuts the cable cleanly and I put a piece of old cable into the new housing and cut to size that way.

Sadly I can't get it to you by Sunday - http://www.tri-cycles.net/workshop/bike-hand-cable-cutter/

Damn, I would have grabbed that one in a heartbeat.

That sounds amazing. Not sure where to look to find such a thing though.

Unfortunately CWC isn't an option for me right now since I need it before Sunday and I'm in Gauteng.

I've got one of these:

It is still excellent.

I think it was less than R300. Although it was a couple of years ago. I bought it from a shop in Cape Town.

Apparently the distributor is in Strijdom Park (wherever that is...).  ;)

Hmm.. that sounds promising. I'll give them a call and see if they sell to the public

Builders have a cheaper option, but I don't know if it's decent or how long it will last.

If it's a once off job, maybe just pop by your lbs and ask nicely. Or maybe a hubber will step in and help for a beer :)

Thanks, I saw that option but its not in stock in any of the nearby Builders. So I guess that helps me make the decision of which one to get from them.

I figured maybe I could go ask nicely at the LBS, but I'm going to need to cut cables in the future anyway, so I may as well just buy a cutter now.
