This year marks the 17th rendition of the FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic. The FNB Magalies Monster routes provide all the hallmarks of a truly South African mountain bike race featuring the necessary ingredients that a quality mountain bike race should have, namely a great setting, spectacular scenery, technically challenging sections with unique single trails and a fantastic atmosphere as you ride through an area that was formed 2 billion years ago.

Is the race CSA sanctioned this year, because its not on the CSA calander?

Good day, yes it is CSA Sanctioned.

A very well organised ride to challenge you.

If you do the 35km or longer ride you will do quite a bit of climbing on challenging terrain.

 

Well worth doing in my opinion.

Was privileged to do this as VIP from FNB for a few years and it is well worth the experience , Make it a weekend and do the run on Sunday as well.

Nope MTB race is on Sat 1st of June, the run id on the 2nd

really keen on doing the half marathon. Where would be the best place to practice climbing in JHB as most routes I know has nowhere near this races elevation gain?

Why not tackle Breedts itself? That is sort of the monster climb.

 

Plus the shorter ride does not go up the actual monster

Yes the shorter doesn't go over the monster but is still has a lot of climbing

this race will never be the same - it has not gone up the true monster since 2015 - that was the last time before it got watered down.

 

Just finishing the old race was quite challenging and few dared to actually tackle it - but it got watered down and the climb is easier so more would be willing to enter.

 

it used to be 1703m Ascend

 

 

 

The new routes does have a great descend and some lekker trails coming back down. Still a hard ride but I just got to laugh at all these "I conquered the monster" on the promo videos... more like Monster Lite...
