Anthem 1 vs Genius

I’m in the market for my first dual-sus. I’ve narrowed my interests down to the Giant Anthem 1 or the Scott Genius, both 2018. They are very different, the Giant is a solid XC with GX groupset and carbon rims and the Genius a full-on trail bike with 150mm travel on the front suspension and a XT groupset. I’ll be doing more single track short-rides which seems to favour the Genius’ setup. Any suggestions?

The genius will be more fun, it would get my vote.

I’ve got an Anthem 2. I do single tracks as fast as I can, but no jumps or massive drops. I haven’t ridden a longer travel bike, but coming from a relatively entry level 27.5 hard tail, the anthem is in a totally different (better) class than my old hard tail. Its a great bike. I enjoy doing gravel climbs, so the xc set up suits me better. Try to demo both. The extra squish on the Genius will be fun when pointing down. Don’t know if I would want to peddle is more than a few hundred meters uphill.

go something in the 130mm range rather , will ab able to attack trails and pedal a bit better than A 150mm tank

Giant Trance

Merida One-twenty

Scott spark 920/940

Spez Stumjumper ST

are good choices

HOWEVER if you're dead set on the original two then take the genius will be the more fun bike by far

The twin lock on the genius will limit travel in the climb mode to 100 mm if I recall correctly. So it may feel like an xc bike going up BUT

It's a heavy bike more suited to the downs.

Probably the more fun bike of the two

I have been on both the twin lock on the Genius works great for climbing but as mentioned above it is a bit of a tank 15+kg. The Anthem wasn't properly set up but it would be the 1 I would go for, plus I have seen 1 with 120MM up front and worked beautifully!

Bought a 2018 Genius last week after much deliberation - first upgrade to dual sus from my Scott Scale 29er. Got the lesser spec'ed (than the one you're looking at) 750 plus.

What clinched the Genius for me was the ability to run both 650b and 29 wheelsets. Was looking to get a 650b for a bit more manoeuvrability, but didn't want to miss out on 29...

My experience thus far (only rode G-spot and 20km at Lebanon to date):

- yes, the heavier bike (remember I have plus tyres too) is more of a mission uphill.

- plus size tyres are fantastic! The extra grip gives a lot more confidence.

- twin lockout works well. Does not lock out 100% completely on the climbs though, but more than enough to make it much more rigid.

- travel is great

- dropper posts are the best thing since sliced bread (my first experience with one!)

- pedal strikes are a bit of an issue - I'm on the 650b still, suspect the 29 will lift the bb a bit, but then compromise on agility again... I won't ride this bike clipped in.

Loving the genius, and if you're going carbon and 29, I reckon you won't find better...

After careful consideration I have decided to settle for the Genius 930, which just seems like a natural fit with my riding style. I’ll report back on my experience after putting it through it’s paces.
