dual-sus riders don't like the word 'soft-tail' because it alludes to the fact that your 'tail' has become soft? :D

Hardtails are like Slayer, 'soft tails' like Metallica  ;)

They are both pretty metal...but only one ends in a riot...

click them

Thanks for all the responses so far... So what would your recommendations be between the sido 2(2nd hand in classified section) and the new merida in the Solomons link?

Neither, the sido is not really a bargain, and the merida comes with suntour suspension, hell nah.

Haha no, because dual suspension bikes and soft tails are not the same thing. Soft tails rely on flex from the chain and seat stays for damping or alternatively elastomers (no suspension) unlike dual suspension bikes that rely on pivots and shocks for damping...

Eg of a softail: BMC Teamelite (elastomer damper) or Trek Procaliber (iso speed decoupler) or Litespeed Unicoi Ti softail.

based on your budget, the Sido.

The merida is a good base (frame and parts) but they skimped on the suspension. You'll have to up you budget to about R30k to get to a decent Dual sus new or at least 2nd hand.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with a 3yr old dual sus 29er. Its not like an extra degree on the head angle is going to kill you
