Should work - there are 3 things you can check

1. The derailleur attachment point - i.e. distance between the pivot and the cable attachment - will change the pull ratio. So check that you've got it right, or you can try moving it around.

2. Normal setup is that you set the low gear with the cable detached, and then adjust tension with the cable connected for the higher ratios. that may help get the spacing right.

3. You may have the rotation (or height) wrong. if you rotate the FD to bring the inside face of the derailleur cage closer up to the chain you'll find that upshifts are easier.

From your pics it seems you have the cable routed incorrectly. Like in the pic below - you seem to have it routed along the blue line

Route it as indicated on the red line and this will give more leverage and easier for the shifter to move the FD.

And if we get really technical -

Assuming the ctr to ctr between the clamp bolt and the pivot point is 30mm and the clamp bolt dia is 6mm

by moving the cable from the blue position to the red position will reduce the force on the trigger lever by 18.2%. :D

I checked other bikes in the shops with the same setup.  I had the cable properly routed, although not fully "locked in".  That hook is to get the cable end out of the way.

I've given up and going to take it to my LBS.

This groove indicates that the cable used to run over this area that says "hook cable".

Which confirms my point on the position of the cable, wrap it like the red line in my pic, the end hooks under the pivot point to keep it out the way, this has no influence on the ease of shifting.

Not sure which bike shop you been to, but lots of these kids bikes are assembled by shop salesman and not done properly more often than not. I've even had a high end bike shop route my cables completely wrong on the FD

Ok my bad, difficult if you don't have the part in front of you.

...uhm jaaaaa .....

Both bikes we bought for Maritz had to be serviced ... both bought at reputable stores !

When you sell a bike for a 6 or 7 year old .... PLEASE take a minute and adjust the brake levers so they can actually use it !!

This is what the cable routing looks like on Maritz's bike - same trigger shifter

This was done by my local bike shop, and works well.

In your 1st post pic it looks like the cable was wrapped the opposite way round the clamp bolt
