What would you recommend as a cheap entry level road bike.

Will be on a trainer 99.9% with maybe a 94.7 or argust once a year.

Please add a link and a rrp if you can.

And before you say classified:) im 186 so would need a 57 or 58 cm or large and dont see many of those especially not cheap.

I would rather search for a good mid level aluminium bike like a Cannondale Caad with Shimano 105 drivetrain, even if it takes a while. You'll get it for reasonable money and not lose so much when you try to sell it, compared to buying cheap and nasty new. My 2c  :)

Thanks, and what would a decent price be?

Don't know your exact budget is, but R10k for this bike is very good value for money, I paid the same in 2016 for a similar model, and still loving the bike to bits.

The frame is really the thing you are buying, all the components, including wheels, can be upgraded to the current fad as money becomes available.

To give you an idea, if you were to buy an S-works Tarmac off the shop floor today, it would cost you R160 000.

I picked up a second hand Raleigh with 9s Sora for R3k. It sits on my trainer permanently.

New you're looking at something like these:

https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/silverback-road/products/silverback-strela-comp-2019

https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/merida-road/products/merida-scultura-300-2019

https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/titan-road-bike/products/titan-stryker-comp-2018

Not a punt or Bike-Addict specifically, just that they have an easy website and are generally good for reference pricing.

https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/372275-bmc-roadracer-sl01-58cm-bm3292/ is a good second hand option in your size I think. Coming from BikeMarket it will be serviced and working nicely.

Or take a wander to your nearest Cash Converters, but you need to know what you're looking for to spot a bargain or otherwise...

What I get from madbrad above, is that you'll pay at least R10 000 for a fair entry level new bike. You can get a fair second hand entry level bike for about R4 000 and if you check it carefully, it will give you the same use as a new one. But if you want to spend R10 000 on a second hand bike, you can buy something really decent, mid-range or even upperclass if you are willing to take something a few years older. Then you'll have something really nice and you won't lose money, not much anyway, compared to what you will lose on a new bike.

That puts new out, you should be able to pick up at least 2nd hand road bike with Sora/Claris components but if a bargain Tiagra aluminium for around R5000.

If you in Jhb area chat to these guys

I got this Canondale CAAD5, with Ultegra, for R 4 500 at Bike Addict last week.

Chain was on 0,5% wear, with new cassette, so I splashed out another R400 for a new chain.

Bike is in a GOOD condition !!  New tires, carbon fork, even came with a set of Shimano clip-pedals

PERFECT for an indoor trainer, and certainly more capable of a funride than me ....

For another R 1000 there was a newer and better Canondale, and yet a better one for just over R6k ...

That was a great deal! With ultegra nogal! Those aluminium Caads are great frames and easily as light as some top end carbon ones - take the poor thing outside for a good run and it'll love you forever!  ;)  :)

Im obviously out of touch and a cheapskate..my idea of entry level is like 3 to 5 k

You can still get a fairly capable road bike for that price range. Just know that the good ones always sell FAST. So be prepared to jump in the car and go meet the seller immediately to check the bike out and close the deal.

I have missed plenty of good deals by waiting a couple of hours before responding to an add... and then it is long gone.

yup - but chances are you'll like it and you'll spend more on the second one sooner than you think. For your budget you should definitely buy 2nd hand - the bike you get will be lightyears away from a new bike at that rice.

This one for R3950 though..
