I've never ridden the garden route area so I do not have the knowledge you have. Can one not put 120mm travel on any of the frames mentioned to make the ride softer?

No, you can't.

You can over-fork them for sure, but an XC race bike is an XC race bike. IE: Fit for purpose. For Joe Average, I would not recommend them at all as you need to be skilled in order to make up for the more race-oriented geometry and the handling characteristics that that brings to the table.

Also, it's not about making the ride softer. It's about the geometry and how the slightly more relaxed head angle, increased travel numbers and more "trail friendly" spec that the bikes come with, inspire more confidence in the rider. Yes, the race bikes will be slightly faster up the hills, but will definitely be more skittish on the way down. And the Garden Route has a LOT of excellent trail that you want to have a confidence-inspiring bike for.

Joe Average should be on a trail bike (generally speaking)

I listed the brands and my view on them, in my conclusion I said:

Conclusion: build the bike you want that your budget allows, don't be dictated by bike shops and or supplier specs but if I had to choose it will be:

  • Trek Top Fuel
  • Rocky Mountain
  • Giant
  • The rest

That then means I would acquire one of the above mentioned frames and build it up. When I compare the brands:

  • Spez
  • RM
  • Pyga

and look at the amount of bike one gets for the amount spent then I will easily go for the RM and Pyga vs the Spez. Yes I agree that the Spez may be cheaper to purchase outright but at what cost?

The specs on the Spez - Stumpjumper at R30k is a mis-mash of kit, SRAM in the front with Shimano for a shifter, derailleur and a Sunrace cassette, then Gemini brakes.

Don't completely agree with your statement about Specialized being expensive to buy when you've also mentioned in the same post the likes of Rocky Mountain and Pyga as options.

Good luck speccing any of those brands for an all-in cost of 45k if you buy the frame only and then a parts kit.... Not to mention that the likes of PYGA / RM will not even start at 45k for a full bike.

You're welcome to weigh in and prove me wrong  . I do not know everything and am on this forum to learn, I do not take offense and or get my panties in a bunch if I'm wrong  :D

So many generalizations and fake news in one post, it's almost the perfect post.

More or less possible, just depends what the price of each is. Like my GG, I got for a good deal, got a bit screwed by sars. Got my Diamond for a good price and cheap wheelset. Drivetrain which should of costed me around 8k I spent about R1000 probably less. All in well under 45k. Dont ask me to crunch the numbers, I will have to go back a year, but yes, its very prossible. I did however carry over pedals, seat, bars and brakes. and even so, it would still be under. But that was a year ago
