I've tried most of the decent Android TV boxes on the market and after returning them all, ultimately settled for the Nvidia shield.

The shield is (for me) the most intuitive and also the most user friendly of the lot and is so nice that we ultimately ordered another one for our main bedroom. :)

They amounted to approximately 200 euros apiece however, not sure how many randelas they will set you back in our beloved Souf Efrica.

Just upgraded my Amazon firestick to the 4k version. It's snappy and responsive. Bought it on prime day for next to nothing... €25 I think. And for all those that like Ethernet.. It's got a USB for a dongle. Brilliant piece of kit

Only gripe with the shield is the stupid remote’s volume control slider that becomes unresponsive after 5 minutes of watching something.

Think Slowbee was asking whether it is a LAN Cable tot USB converter.

We all know you get a Wifi USB Dongle, but Kallie mentioned an Ethernet to USB dongle, which is also new to me.

Ah yeah, the USB ethernet devices have been around for a long time now, I used to use them with older macbook air's in my office.

The Ematic is good because it has built in ethernet vs most others that need the USB adapter.

Shield is stupidly expensive in SA. They do have a new one coming out soon though which will most likely be the next king of Android media players.

The current shield is the best player on the market which is quite something considering how old it is.

So if I read / understand this thread correctly, something like the Mi Box S allows me to watch netflix / you tube, etc over my Non-Smart TV without the need to connect my laptop to the TV with a HDMI cable?

Just want to make sure before forking out the +- 1200Randelas for it.

Some guys had issues with the Mi Box when DSTV Now ran an update earlier in the year.

The Ematic is selling for the same price.

Toss-up between those two...

Talk about scorcery, you can Transmit your HDMI video feed over LAN Cable, which is surely much cheaper to get in LOOOOONG lengths compared to HDMI cables:

https://www.cesdeals.com/product/hdmi-extender-30m-transmitter-tx-rx-hdmi-to-rj45-converter-by-cat5e-6-cable-305371

Disclaimer: I have no idea if this works though, just came across it now.

locally available!

i expect this will have a huge loss in quality.

cat5 cable is 10/100mb/s

hdmi is 4.92Gb/s

Yes. I've had the Mi Box S since March and have been more than happy with it. Running DSTV Now pretty flawlessly, although it's happened once or twice that I've had to log on again.

Has a dedicated Netflix shortcut, but don't use it. Most of my viewing is through TeaTV, Kodi and YouTube, Redbull TV
