2 X 2 Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I will not ride this race. I'll rather go to the OFM and make a week end of it, no parking and traffic problems and also a Argus qualifier
Jackes Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I will not ride this race. I'll rather go to the OFM and make a week end of it' date=' no parking and traffic problems and also a Argus qualifier[/quote'] And also a great vibe, quiet fast and in the nicest city in SA... Damm, I can't ride it this year.
Gumpole Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 R245 is a lot BUT...the average race in jhb costs R150 and you dont get - 2% of entry fees go towards blind & pdi cyclists who can enter for free- full road closure- race through the city and suburb of Jhb, with crowds supporting you - not 100km of veld grass and nothing- beat your non-cycling friends by two hours, who do the race on their MTBs just for fun!
Mielies Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I will rather do the ofm as well. Still a lot of travel expenses for me though. Hopefully I can share the travelling costs with someone.
AndreZA Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I still get the concept of event sponsors. You've got P'nP and Energade and this guy for this table and another for something else. Everybody got their signs up but when you look at the breakdown of where all the money goes, it's all paid for with the entry fees.
Gumpole Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 - there is also some money that supports the charities, that doesn't come out of entry fees..(dont now if it is millions or thousands though ??)
mallo Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Interesting read thus far but have you checked the breakdown given for the race last year, note it does not indicate the income from any of the sponsors. Gumpole don't be fooled about free entry for PDI's , it does not work that way only selected persons get the free entry
Bateleur1 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Might be a bit steep but is one of my favourates. WIll be there.
Evan Andreou Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Will be there, I owe it to myself after a mechanical ended my race last year at 17.8km. Now that was expensive per km
2 X 2 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Races will just get more expensive as long as we enter them. An organizer put the entry fee up and he then check how many people enters, if the numbers don't go down or significantly down on the previous years they just up the fee again next year
TNT1 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 - there is also some money that supports the charities' date=' that doesn't come out of entry fees..(dont now if it is millions or thousands though ??)[/quote'] Dunno about the 94.7, it's a bigger race, but the percentages will be higher but probably similar... Entry fees and sponsorships at this years Ride for Sight totalled around R0.8million, after expenses, RP Foundation gets around R300 000.00 Expenses include paying the cops (and no, we don't have full road closure, and it still costs a fortune - I shudder to see what full road closure costs an organiser), getting medals made, paying the timing company, paying the CSA officials, Prize money etc...
GIRR Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Road closure and water points are great if you're not in a racing category, but if you are it doesn't really make any difference. So to pay an extra hundred rand for this when you don't use it makes little sense. Most riders are non-racing category so will probably have to pay for a day licence on top of the entry fee, which they will see absolutely no value or point in doing. I'm still going to do the race despite the fact it is a complete rip off and I ride in a racing category. But I am pretty sure there will be a large drop in numbers at this years race.
TNT1 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 And I wont be riding 94.7. But that's cause I think Jeremy Mansfield is the devil...

If not then alot of people is gonna be very angry when they pick up their numbers and they have to fork out another R30.
Canaris Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 going to be interesting to see the new ride through JHB. are the roads not full of potholes?
