Rider Protest?

Stage 19 of the Giro d'Italia, the longest stage of the race set to run 258km from Morbegno to Asti, has been shortened after a rider protest at the stage start on Friday morning.

After riders began to question the logic of such a long stage on Thursday night, riders talked with race director Mauro Vegni and UCI commissaires before the start in Morbegno.

Could be due to this:

It is understood that the riders, led by Lotto Soudal and AG2R La Mondiale, were unhappy about the length of the stage so late in the race after a final week of long stages, early starts and long transfer before and after stages.

The peloton rolled out from Morbegno in Lombardy, 10 minutes later than scheduled, under a downpour and are set to board team buses to head to a new start point further along the race route.

Looks like they started in the rain, it's a protest over stage length.

And here I was looking forward to an all out Bhora assault on the points jersey..

I reckon Demare and co have the beating of Bora. FDJ are all in for Demare, whereas Bora have 2 riders in the top 10 and they'd never been doing lead-out duty for Sagzy - advantage FDJ it seems

In a world full of perception, fake sport, cancel culture, etc. … the big cycling tours have always been the last “Bastion” to me. Where the guys ride until they pass out. :nuke:  :nuke:  :nuke:  :excl:

When stages get shortened beforehand, (not during the race because of golfball sized hail) …. I am somewhat disappointed ….. if it is the reason?

Well done to the peloton I say! They finally got something done by raising their voices.

I hope this can be carried over into larger rider safety discussions, and eventually, some sort of levelling of the playing fields where the financial benefits from TV rights can be more equally distributed to the guys actually putting on the show... the riders.

They sure did better than that half-arsed #garbage thing they did at Le Tour...

Baby steps... one can say...

PS. Riding 250kms, in full-on rain, 9°C, only for the sprinters to have their fun in the final 10km will not be a good prospect at all, not after 18 days of hard racing.

I, like the Eurosport commentators, think it’s a load of shite.

Protest for safety, sure I’ll support that, but the teams knew the stages well in advance, knew about the shite transfers etc for months, that was the time to raise it, not on the day of the race because it’s a bit cold and wet.

Also, not all the teams wanted a shorter stage and shortening it will favour some that would have hoped for a sprint after a tougher day in the legs.

“Supercazzola” – what the Italians is calling it.

“Adam Hansen has explained the position of some of the riders at the Giro via Twitter, revealing that they asked for the stage to be shortened last night but that was refused. With heavy rain falling at the start, some riders were reluctant to race, sparking the reduction in the stage distance. It seems that some teams and riders wanted to race but the majority won out and the stage was reduced, with the convoy to the new start cutting out 133km“

Thus, firstly, not all agreed but had to toe the line.

Secondly, a large portion of the riders stood around without masks, but used “Covid” as the excuse not to ride ….

It is what it is though … what’s done is done.

… they (CPA) might have won the battle, but they’ve lost the war (people)
