Not on this bike but I have many other chains in the household. Will try XX1 now

Is KMC an option ?

Yes have one as spare. Point is one isnt suppose to ride with a spare chain in your back pocket.  Riding with GX is like owning a landrover. Its amazing until its not

I have had some bad wear on GX eagle chains. Was worn to .75 within 2500km. When I replaced the chain with a new gx eagle chain, it was slipping on the bottom 3 cogs (new chain and worn cassette combo). But I have not experienced a failure like your chain.

What is your FTP?

I got 2000 km on a GX chain and more than 12000 on a XX1  chain with the same cassette. Go with XX1 it's worth the extra money.

Does the level of cassette installed, have an influence on how long an xx1 chain last? Will an xx1 chain last as long on a GX cassette compared to an xx1 cassette?

I can only comment on the GX cassette. I went through 2 GX Chains and 1 XX1 chain in about. 14000km. Then I had to replace the cassette and still have the chain as a reserve. My guess is the XX1 cassette might have similar longevity to the GX. I think the GX is riveted and XX1 machined out of a block which may be quieter and lighter? I'm sure there will be experts who can provide the answer.

Yes the GX is rivited and xo1 and xx1 is machined out of a single piece. Gx is also a lot heavier than xo1 and xx1

Well the GX cassettes wear out faster than XX1 (in my experience) so I would assume there is an effect.

It’s well documented that while being pricier, the XX1 and XO1 drivetrain parts offer far more longevity than the components on lower end, so the money 💴 is well spent in the long run, assuming you look after your drivetrain as well which also has an impact.

I'll let you guys in on a secret.  You don't have to spend R10k on a cassette!

It's called 2x. Incredible technology from road bikes and hypermarket mtbs, allows you to shift gears both at the back and the front.  Despite having more parts it's a fraction of the cost of 1x, and you don't need all the flimsy 12spd stuff either.
