Converting Sram force 2X to 1X

This is a genuine question, why would you do this ? What is the benefit.

The downsides are obvious: spending money to get smaller range, bigger gaps between ratios, sloppier shifting, bigger chance of dropping a chain, etc.

I don't get it.

Because I just love the 1X system. I know you can’t really compare mtb and road but I love the 1X on my mtb.

And I loathe front derailleurs. I know people will say it’s not setup properly but I’ve had it checked by multiple mechanics on different bikes and there’s always some sort of rubbing somewhere. And I hate noise on my drivetrain.

Dropping chains should be less on a 1X system and I’m not sure why shifting would be sloppier.

sound like you need Campagnolo

I can't comment on the SRAM Force setup, but I went 1x on my Shimano 105 equipped road bike.  I just swopped out the rear derailleur for a Shimano Ultegra RX derailleur, put a Shimano XT 11-40 cassette on the back and an Absolute Black oval 50 tooth chainring on the front and loving it.

Sram actually have an 11-42 cassette that I could fit but it’s quite weighty. It would allow me to fit a 50t chainring though. How do you find the jumps with this combination?

I'm with you Bub. In the words of my brother and I: Ugh, 2x is ***.

Because it is. Slap a 42t on with a 11-36 cassette and a clutch derailleur, realise that you'll need some extra strength for the climbs, then enjoy the simplicity and lack of chainslap.

with a 50/34 11-25 I find I can stay in the 50 even up the south side of Chappies..

With a 28 it would be a lot easier and a 30T it would be comfortable.

with a 46T front chainring it would be a walk in the park.

We don;t have high enough or steep enough climbs to dismiss a 1x drivetrain. Then the wind blows most of the time so tall final drive gearing isn't necessary either....

Its almost like you could use an old front derailleur...

and then amazingly you could make this derailleur device shift side to side somehow to derail the chain?

It'll never catch on

thats a neat chain guide. Wonder if they have a bracket for a direct to chain stay mount like on scalpel Ai

oh you mean something like this?

Thank you guys for all your suggestions. I think I’m gonna go with a 50T upfront and an 11-42 cassette. Gives me all my low end and top gears equal to my current setup. Probably going to miss my 16T cog though.

Last question from me. Would I need shorter chainring bolts? I know if I put on wolf tooth I need to change the bolts but if I put Sram Force 1 onto a Force 22 would I need to do the same?
