The housing was cracked, maybe he overlooked it, honest mistake. You mentioned the bike was working 100%? Your mechy opened the RD and now it’s broken?? I think you just need to do some minor adjustments as my brand new di2 also made weird noises when I did the first installation, but after adjustments, flawless. Also, you agreed on a value, it’s unethical to expect new parts, it’s like buying a secondhand bike and insuring it for latest replacement value, not cool.

The seller has offered to assist you and I think is more then reasonable. The bike work when you road it, the bike worked when he road it. What if something happened to the bike while it was in your care as it was not working when you road it again? Also, di2 don’t allow cross chaining. Honestly bud, I’m with the seller on this one. Three days later and now the bike is not riding at all?? Be happy he is willing to assist you. Improvise and swap derailleurs, use the bike and keep your eyes on the classifieds. He gave you a cracked FD and you broke his RD so technically, you squared. Lastly, get a new Mechy!

Wait, wait wait. You have to insure your second hand bike for new replacement, otherwise your insurance company slaps you for under insuring.

When I crashed my TCR which was second hand, they did not care if I bought it second hand, they just called dealers asking for prices and told me I had under insured the item.

I sat down with my insurance, we looked at new, what I spend and reach a middle ground that both parties agreed to and the premium was based accordingly. Also, every 6 months I go through all my policies and make adjustments as needed. That’s just me though.

I did take the bike for a quick spin on the day I received it to ensure saddle height, stem, drops etc was setup correctly for me. Gears worked 100% but then again, I didnt use the full range.

Also, you are forgetting the FD was CRACKED (and not disclosed) before it was sent to me. I have pics to prove this sent by the seller via WhatsApp which I managed to zoom in and clean up using some specific software. It is clearly visible.

My theory was that the bike was dropped / banged as something caused the crack. It makes sense that the RD could have suffered a similar impact to its internal workings, hence my concern and request for a full refund.

We have agreed to some monetary value for the components (market related / second hand). Nothing available so had to fork out additional cash for a new.

It stopped working after the first KM on my ride on the Sat after shifting down to the highest gear. The sound that it was making (and not shifting) was evident of something fundamentally wrong. At this point, I dropped the bike at my Mechy and he took it apart of figure out what the problem is in oder to attempt to fix it. It was beyond repair. Also, just a note, this is a top Mechy who I have been using for years as well as my other team mates. I consider him an expert in his field.

You just admitted 2 things

1. the gears were working 100%

2. you dropped the bike.... could this have caused the damage RD?

Have you claimed on this? Sorry, having had 3 claims in a year and getting investigators assigned and come to chat with me have been through the ringer. Have spreadsheets of what is on the bike, invoice attached, how I paid for it, what the market value it, when it was installed and the serial number.

I know that another friend had a 2016 Tarmac Comp frame replaced under warranty and they only had 2019 S-works in stock, so also had to bump up insurance a lot once it arrived re built.

Is your mechanic certified or qualified to do “0” level servicing or repairs on Shimano components? If yes, by all means I apologize, but if not, then you have no leg to stand on. Nevertheless, get replacement derailleurs, ride your bike and enjoy it.

I honestly hope you get it sorted.

Yes I have and all my claims were fairly treated and within reason.

This answers some of my questions, you still have said if you put the rear wheel on.

Another question: Do you own a Torque Wrench?

What's missing form your details are:

5. Unpacked bike that was meticulously protected which I was stoked about. Went about putting seat post in place, re-attaching cockpit and slapping on some pedals. Bike looked great, so I plugged in the Di2 to charge and waited in anticipation for Saturday’s roll.

Did you attach the Rear wheel when you unpacked the bike or was it attached in the box? ???

Did you test shift the gears after putting the bike together?   - YES - Gears worked 100%

Did you test ride in the driveway after putting your bike together? YES - Gears worked 100% and Checked Saddle, Stem, Drops Etc

If not you're very brave to go on a Cradle ride without checking, the brakes work, the saddle height, handle bar position, gears shift properly, etc

6. Saturday arrived, grabbed the bike and headed out to the cradle to meet my team for its maiden voyage.

Did you drive to the Cradle or Ride there? ???

If you drove ...

how was the bike transported? Back seat or Bike rack ? ???

Did you drive down Cedar road through the bumpy detour where they are doing the road works? Ie could the RD have been damaged at this Point? ???

( I drove through there on Sunday and though my car was going to fall apart and then reduce speed to 30km/h)

7.Rode up the first rise (1km)  then started shifting to biggest great for decent. Heard a weird grinding sound coming from the RD. Stopped too check what’s going on as I have never heard this sound before (I have a TT bike with the same Di2).

Was this the first time you shifted gears? NO Test drive on was done on Wednesday 13th Jan

I am also confused about the insurance part, both insurance companies i have been with, asked me to go get a replacement value quote for a new bike  and I have insured it for that amount.

Let’s say you buy a TCR 2010 model on the hub for 15K. You phone for insurance and get told go for a replacement Quote. Giant tells you they only have 2020 and 2021 TCR and give you a 60K quote. Now, you contact your insurance and insure you 15K bike for 60K, all is well until something goes wrong and now comes the claim. The insurance then ask for proof of purchase, ownership, who you bought it from, what you paid etc. Based on the fact that you insured your 15K bike for 60K might risk your claim being rejected because your actual loss was only 15K. This is just my opinion and based on my previous claims.

So, what I would do is basically get a replacement quote, inform the insurance what I paid and we mutually decide what it’s actually worth and insure it for that amount. You might get lucky and get a decent bike at a very good price and then insure it for a little more as you won’t get it at the same price.

That also saves me the admin of have to prove pricing, owning etc as I inform the insurance when the policy gets updated.

i dont understand, an insurance should replace your asset with the same or something better. If you buy a 2010 bike, insurance wont find another 2010 bike because the bike is old plus you paying a premium on the amount you insured the bike for (new replacement bike). Same with household contents, they cover you for what you insured your items for eg. if you have a tube TV, insurance will replace it with an LCD tv.

So you want to pay 10, insure for 100, pay the premium and then claim 100. Personally, I don’t agree with this, but each to his own. Insurance is there to protect your risk, not upgrade your lifestyle. Pay 10, insure for 10, bike lost, you get 10 minus your excess and go buy another bike.

Send specs of bike along with proof of ownership to LBS. Get quote for replacement if lost or irreparable damaged.

Send to insurance and pay premium accordingly.

What am I missing here?
