I've been switching between these two from Extreme Lights. They've been holding up great, good visibility and lasts long enough. The BackUp looks and feels a bit more premium - not sure if that'll faze you.

Any idea of warranty on these two? "Holding up great" ... years? In wet conditions?

Hi tinmug,

The BackUp will be the better option of the two mentioned. Especially in the wet/muddy conditions that you mentioned. Aluminium casing which makes it very durable.

They both have a one year warranty.

Thanks. Ryder Marathon: one drawback with rechargeable is when the battery dies the entire device gets binned, but worth exploring at the price. How long have you had the device @DieselnDust? Use it in the rain much (only IPX4)? Garmin Varia: as with anything Garmin no doubt a well-made product. As with anything Garmin it's pricey ... and won't play with Wahoo. ????

It just seems* like everything is good for only one season. What a waste of (mostly) non-recyclable plastic. ????

* Haven't tried them all (yet).

Ryder lights have a lifetime guarantee, so if the battery dies - get your local bike shop to do a returns form with Omnico and it will get replaced.

I've ridden with a few of them in the rain with no issues. Even wash my bike with the thing on sometimes. Actually, one went to the bin after my puppy found it charging.

Garmin Varia/Radar works with Wahoo, if i'm not mistaken.

2 weeks turnaround for UK is also not that bad.  I am impressed.  CSS usually takes 2 weeks to answer a mail......

MaxxD......that is some serious lumens.  ????

Ive had it a number of years, since 2013/4 I think. Its the MaxxD 7 so I think thats 2400Lumen at full blast. Massive amount of light. The new circuit board gives me the Reflex function so I set it on bright and it dims and brightens depending on how fast I'm going. really lekker for 24hr races.

Yip every one of the Ryder tailights I've owned that had a battery die was replaced. I tend to lose rear lights more than need to replace because it broke. I recently found an old knog in a box of old light spares. Darn thing still works!! it must be 16 years old

Anyone keen on a tail light that integrates nicely with your seat, mounting on the rails, i recommend this rockbros.

Looks super OEM, comes with a spare rubber seat post mount too so you can unscrew and transfer the light to a second bike.

The auto stop/bright feature is nifty.

Any recommendations for a good quality and durable tail light (that survives off-tar riding and muddy/sandy/wet conditions)?

????

Save up and spend your ZARs on an Exposure Light... Bloomin expensive, yes; but, it's simply in a class of it's own in my opinion.

Been cycling in the dark for close to 15 years now.

Garmin.  Lezyne.  Bontrager.

There really is just ONE light out there that is worth the money for me:  https://www.exposurelights.co.za/

  • Lasts for 10+ years
  • Decent run time.........3 hours at max and 12 hours at low......and by low I mean you can still do singletrack flat out on a night ride
  • No external battery pack

The local dude sits in Nelspruit and I received decent service from him.  Got my second light there.
First one was bought in the UK.

Couldn't agree more.

Many options on the fly as to power usage/lux levels and also has the self adjusting high beam function on the MTB versions (I have the MaxxD).
