Would a GT avalanche be a good buy

Not planning on any hard core trails. Just good quality trustworthy bike for easy to moderate trails.

The GT is a good solid bike. From your DM you are 1.74 so the small will be out you will need a Medium.

GT make some good quality products. Both of these look well looked after and good spec. Look like a good price

Agreed. The small will be too small.

The both seem to have Deore XT gearing and RockShox Tora forks. Both pretty decent and will handle most trails without problem. Price seems VERY good.

I was in the same boat as you, have not ridden a bike for almost 20 years I was shocked to see prices in 2021, nevertheless I ended up with a Giant Talon 2. Fantastic for entry level. My first initial 2 choices were Titan and Silverback but they are like hens teeth on the new market.

One of my friends also started with the GT and he is super happy with it.

GT Make good bikes. My starter was a GT Avalanche 2. No issues whatsoever.
