He passed away unfortunately .......... quite a few other riders had injuries as well, broken leg and some fractured collar bones etc.

Just a correction he was not knocked down by the truck, there was a freak accident in the bunch and he landed under the trucks wheels. I wasn't there though so hopefully someone who was can give more detail .......

Shaun, it happened within sight of the bridge crossing the R59, going out. The bunch I was in was behind the bunch that was involved. A truck passed us, giving us plenty room, I saw the truck pass the next bunch in the distance, and something happened. Couldn't see. Our bunch arrived on the scene and the guy was lying in the road.

My thoughts are with his family.

Eina, memories of accident in that vacinity when someone in the Lido bunch fell into an oncoming car a few years ago a little further along the route close to the airfield.

Condolences to his family and I hope the other fallers get better soon.

Thanks BigBen. Didn't see what happened and couldn't help, so we didn't stick around.

Giving some serious thought to avoiding that route in future.

Once again, my thoughts are with the families of all those involved.

My sincere condolences to Family & Friends!!! May he RIP

Flippa & BB, so you say that it seemed like the bunch came down and the rider fell under the trucks wheels. Is this correct?

An extreemly dangerous route is this one.

I once saw a young lady almost sucked into the wheels of a massive truck on thi route, she was terrified afterwards, this route is full of trucks, my humble opinion is its not "if" but "when".

Very sorry to hear this.

strongs to the truck driver too - even though it doesn't sound like it was his fault in any way the poor dude must be shaken up as well.

I was in the group and was unfortunate to go down as well. We were riding two abreast and the pace was a comfortable 35km/h. The guy apparently hit a stone in the road (there was also a puncture - I can not say if it was the same guy that went down). It seems that he bumped the guy next to him who went down, the other guy strayed into the centre of the road. The guy hit the side of the truck, just in front/above the tyre. The rest you can imagine what happened.

As BigBen said there were other injuries - broken leg and collarbones.

This was not the truck drivers fault.

Thanks Chippy, hope all the other guys will be OK. Do you have a name for me as I have started a record databse with all incidents on this route? You can PM me the name if you don't feel comfortable posting it on this forum.

Slowpoke, you right, the poor driver must be going thru hell as well as the other guys whom have witnessed this tragedy. My thoughts & prayers are with them all.!!!

I again appeal to all those cyclists out there to be more vigilant and make themselves as visible as possible. Although this incident was a freak accident, we all still need to do our part as well.
