hi All, just found a solution to a big issue i had with trying to extend the fixed goosneck towbar on my defender past the spare wheel, enabling me to reuse all my bike racks . Speak to Martin on 0794496002 at www.xramp.co.za image.png.88b0282a772e2f894e8f1a7a49727552.png

Holdfast has various lengths as well and are available at most automotive places.

Had the same problem when I bought my Thule rack and had to mount it on my Grand Vitara. R200 fix later.

Op is talking about these 2 flat plates. I think holdfast made a rack with this type of connection years ago, but have abandoned the idea

Hi everyone....bump.

This is a little confusing, I have been getting quotes for R4000+

Is this the price to extend my towbar a few centimeters?

or can someone refer me to a simpler solution?

Since you have the square interface, it is much simpler to extend. The gooseneck on your vehicle is removable and you can easily replace it with a simple square tube extension while on the Defender the gooseneck part is not easily replaceable.

You get bike racks (Karoorack being one) that plug straight in to the 2" receiver you have. If you'd rather have the ball on the end that extension won't be difficult to fabricate.

What do you guys recommend?

I see those Karoorack racks are very expensive.

I just need something for my carbon road bike, however sometimes i might need to carry my road+ebike mtb

Ok thanks, yeah they don't really reply to emails and when i called it was mostly come and we'll check . and they close at 4.....but will make a plan to get to them.

Thule SA sells the adapter in the very first pic, it is around R4k with the extension piece and ball hitch but it's really robust and has to be, it replaces the standard gooseneck. It's also not easy to take on and off as it has to be super tight to be secure, but it solves a problem that Defender missed altogether ?

I had a similar problem on my Discovery, fortunately it had a flat plate towbar with 4 bolt holes, and Holdfast made an extension that bolted on.  I found though that the extra length adds extra leverage and strain on the towbar.  I used to to strap the top of bike rack to the spare wheel to take some of that load off the towbar.  I'd imagine with the weight of a couple of e-bikes on a rack this could become significant.
