Hello esteemed forum users. knowers of things and general work avoiders.

I have a rather massive itch that I may need to scratch soon and I was wondering if any of you had or have any idea about 'reasonable' shipping from the USA to RSA.

The frame in question;

https://velo-orange.com/collections/neutrino-mini-velo/products/neutrino-minivelo

If you take the fork out it fits in a normal suitcase, so if anyone is travelling to the states they could always just grab it for me!

I have chatted to the guys at Velo Orange and the best they can do is 400 dollars, which is 6000zar and half what the frame costs. I am many things but unfortunately rich is not one of them.

I'm open to suggestions.

I have also come across this;

https://www.myus.com/welcome/south-africa/?aid=1000721&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaign}&utm_content={adgroup}&gclid=CjwKCAjw0a-SBhBkEiwApljU0qNeXR8Hh_EVK4FRWvpk7SjsC2NsB8AYB1KAWeYlMAMnkwve0cjamBoCYIUQAvD_BwE

Anyway, I am sure some of you have had similar conundrums in the past and I would love to draw on some collective knowledge to see if there is a solution to sidestep this.

I have used Aramex Global shopper for frames in the past. Takes about two week to arrive and price for shipping was very reasonable. A cardboard box with a frame inside is normally not to heavy. However you will be charged local tax, and then vat when bringing into SA.

I am happy to pay the VAT etc... The R6000 shipping is the deterrent.

I will attempt to get a quote from Aramex Global. Thank you

Aramex Global Shopper
Postbox Courier
MyUS

Used all three in the past with good results. Aramex is the slowest of the three and Aramex in SA is not that pleasant to deal with, Might be the cheaper of the three though.

So excuse my ignorance, but how does it work? The guys at Velo Orange want to get the frame to me, I'm in no rush and I'm happy with the R1815zar quoted on the site.

Do they ship it to an Aramex Global Shopper office/hub and then Aramex get it to me?

Either of the above will provide you with a shipping address to their warehouse. MyUS for example is in Florida.

Velo Orange will send it there with USPS or whatever they offer.

Once at the warehouse you will receive a notification that it is ready to ship. They will provide you with various shipping options and prices.

You accept one and they do the rest.

If you use choose Aramex,Velo Orange will have to ship to their Depot in New York. Velo Orange might charge you a local shipping fee to send there and add tax to their price (this is up to them). From Aramex NY it will ship out to SA ( shipping fee based on weight). When it hits SA VAT will be added to original invoice for customs clearance as well as an agent fee normally R100 or so.  Hopefully that makes sense.

I've used MyUS before, shipping wheels and then a fork through them so these are reasonably sized items.

You open a MyUS account and they give you a My US 'Box number' to ship to (in Florida I think). Once it is with them they will check it is properly packed and offer you 6 to 10 different shipping options with different prices. My experience was seamless - they pre-paid customs clearance and they were pretty good at giving a number of well-priced options. They are also useful for private purchases - i.e. off ebay or us classifieds when you may not have an invoice from a business for your purchase. The US domestic shipping leg to get it to them is usually pretty cheap or free.

Only downside is that you will not know the international shipping cost until they have the parcel (which means you have already bought it).

Good luck

Ok awesome

Velo Orange will ship to all lower states free for the order, so that is sorted.

Then Aramex do the rest! OK cool. That makes sense.

I will ask the guys at VO to pack it into the smallest box possible and go from there.

Thank you for the wisdoms! I had definitely expected @Steady Spin and @100Tours to weigh in. I will wait for Morne, Diesel and perhaps Wayne to add to the above.

Thank you so much to everyone for helping out. I am now confident I can get this done without feeling like I've paid an entire drive train's worth just to get the frame here!

how the hell did they quite 400$ shipping? are they high? Was it not a typo? $40 is usually what stores that side quote for DHL express. Did you ask them for DHL express quote? I've ordered from Jenson USA, Wolftooth and a few other more obscure ones like Redshift, Ovega Negra etc  and they all used DHL express. they should also do it vat free since it's shipped internationally?

Alot of the time...especially with US stores (since they dont know the rest of the world exist), They are very clueless about international shipping....and very apprehensive once you say 'africa'.

anyway. yes, as mentioned...if not...Aramex Global shopper.

You go and create an AGS account.

- You'll get a list of addresses in all sorts of countries where AGS have depots. These will be your shipping adresses in those countries. They show you exactly how to fill out the address lines too.

-the US one is in New York. So Velo-O will ship it to that AGS address in NY and once there...it will get processed. They'll then calculate shipping fees and stuff and let you know on your AGS profile. They'll also ask for the invoice here if it was not in the box. If you pay up it then gets forwarded to AGS south africa adressed to you...and then delivered to you.

if you decide to go this route, ask Velo Oragne to make you an official invoice....not the one you get when you made a payment to their store. It has to have their address and vat info on. AGS will ask for this as mentioned above.

- you'll have it in about 2 weeks from that side.

Don't let Aramex charge you R1500.

Follow this link: https://www.aramexglobalshopper.com/en/service-updates/49848/Aramex-Global-Shopper-Lifetime-Membership-for-USD-1-only

The offer has expired by holding thumbs that the code still works.

They do have a cheap basic membership if this doesn't work. You don't need the personal shopper thing.

thats the normal R15 one anyway. The 1500 is for a "FLEX" account. You'll make that 1500 back in 3 shipments from the states (-20% off). these should be promo codes floating around still. I got mine for free a few years ago when they ran a marketing campaign on KFM
