A very awesome 95km ride was detroyed after a very unpleasant discussion about the bill, which I think was unecessary. Just wanted to get a feel of what the hub felt.

Post ride we got to where we parked, and went in to have a refresher. Five gents, two who do not drink alcohol. Two breakfasts (R120), one burger (R105), Lamb dish (R210) and a steak (R145). The alcohol split between the three ways (beers, tonic water, Jameson/Glenfidich) R256. Bill was R956, plus tip, R1056.

The problem came when the alcohol drinkers divided the bill 250 between the three of them, leaving R306 between the two non-drinkers. The comments after that went really sideways, and the day (in my view) was ruined.

Hubbers. How do you split post ride meals? What methods do you use? What is peaceful?

Pay for what you consume + a decent tip to the waiting staff that would be juggling the figures

I wouldn't fit in then .... I (we) don't split bills amongst cyclists or friends period. Each to his own, had enough crap experiences in my life. Waiters sometimes moan but it is what it is as the woke say

Plenty of places in CT and all over flat out refuse to do separate bills for tables…so better have a notepad, app or calculator handy😅

To each his own i guess, but for me lifes too short to count cents with REAL friends. Thats the caveat…REAL friends aren't boxes and don't take advantage.
We do dinner club with a pair of my wifes close friends once a month or so…where we wine and dine at a leka place, share a taxi, stay over at either-or’s houses etc. We’ve had an silent arrangement for years…they get the bill this time, we get the bill next time.
It doesnt matter who pays more or less what time. In contrast, we like one-upping each other everytime so it just gets better. Also a nice way of finding new places all over town.

People who are funny at bill time about splitting the bill right down the middle are also people who wont see me again probably. 😊😅

Also…id hate to invite some of you to a braai by the sounds of it haha. My table isnt big enough for all your own side dishes, salads, snacks, plates, glasses etc. Not to mention ill have to send you the bill for the electricity, fire starters, wood, water you used in my toilets. What about the dish washing and refuse removal fees?😅

And do the maths right too! Looks like the drinkers here made the teetotalers fund their booze.

Sad fact. Ruined what was actually a very cool ride

Doesn't sound like these are your friends, so I reckon the price you paid is relatively cheap to learn what their characters are.

I won't ride with them again, or if you do, start the post ride meal with "this time everyone pays their own, I'm not sponsoring someone else's booze this time."

No next time, I’d rather go alone. Some very unpleasant things said...

In such circumstances I tend to just note the behaviour and adjust my expectations and level of collaboration accordingly. Cheap school fees in the end, could have ended up doing business with them.

When splitting a bill I generally don't quibble about 50 bucks here or there with my mates cos over time it's bound to even out. But if I notice someone consistently having short arms and deep pockets I have no qualms saying something.

Not a fun situation to be in, but if they're lekker people to actually ride with and you wish to continue being riding "buddies" with them, you're gonna have to have the chat about the bill and put your foot down about your intentions on going dutch, and that you wont be paying more than what you owe. It's a awkward convo to have but you'll only have to do it once. It's okay to continue being riding buddies with people and not actual buddies. You dont have to love everyone, but you can learn to tolerate them for the sake of the ride, if the rides are good.

Sadly agreed...

Each person pays their own way.

Best way!

If someone else tells me that my share is R153 for the R120 meal I just ate I would just smile and say no thanks. There wouldn't be a fight.

I was actually going to pay in the interest of piece. Other gent wasnt having it at all, lol

Each pays proportionate to what they had, unless everyone had essentially the same thing. Plus extra for the tip. I someone in the group provided transport then they shouldn't have to pay at all, at least not for their beers/drinks.

Edit: I actually remember one character from ages back who'd insist on splitting everything equally. Guess who was sure to order far more than anyone else.

Why is there always someone like that out there...geez.

In most cases I wouldn't be bothered either.
"Rough calculation, us three R250 each, you guys R150 each."
I wouldn't object. The R153 was a bit strange for me. And if someone doesn't want to tip 25% on their meal (i.e subsidise someone else) then it shouldn't be an issue either.

We actually don't know who rejected the proposed split and who made a fuss at the rejection.
Might very well be R140 burger + beer complaining at having to pay R250 to fund lamb shank + whiskey.

No, was the brekkie lad 🤣

This is why I stopped riding...

(thats a lie, I got fat a lazy)

Totally unnecessary, drinkers should have at least covered their booze bill
