I'm swapping out my Elixirs for Tech M4's. My thought was that I should be able to keep the rotors and same shim/spacer/adapter layout on the post-mount and that the pad-to-rotor contact points would be roughly the same on the new setup. But with the M4's the calipers are about 0.5cm outward, i,e, not making full contact any more. So what are my options?

I can't move the caliper unit closer to the post as it (a) collides with the (Elixir-specific) adapter and is getting rather close to the spokes.

Should I:

  • Get a Hope-specific adapter?
  • Get bigger rotors?
  • ...different brakeset?

So effectively the rotor is 0.5/1mm too close to the spokes (rotor only catches on one side of caliper), or is it the other way that the PM adapter is too shallow that the rotor sticks out the top of the caliper?

If it is the first, are you using any adapters CL-6 Bolt? If you are, a machine shop can machine the face for you, had the same issue when I went from Shimano to Formula brakes.

If the second issue, then it's likely the actual adapter that may need to be adjusted.

Just the other way around - the PM adapter is to deep so the pads don't make full contact with the rotor.

I'm trying to find some info on adaptors for the M4 but those pdf's aren't in circulation anymore...

Get in touch with International Trade and get the adapters from them. Went through the same when I moved from my Lyrik to the Pike. Had to replace the front adapter. Rear was luckily just fine.

This was on the V4 though.

What size rotors are on there now?

I know with certain adapters the spacing is a little bit different, for the most part the same.
EG: Sram-Shimano SRAM=200mm rotor, while Shimano = 203mm rotor.
So no new rotors are needed, but check the minimum wear rating while you are at it, good excuse for an upgrade:thumbup:

IMO, your best bet would be to either A: get a newer adapter specific for hope (spacing and thickness is more than likely different due to offset of mount points on the caliper, thus pushing caliper further out), B: Sand it away and hope for best (not recommended).

The problem is with the spherical washers needed for the Elixirs. Take those off and you're good to go.

If you've got the one that looks like 2 tubes (see pic below) you won't be able to because it's got the concave side of the one washer machined in, but if it's the standard one piece one you'll be fine.

Thanks @droo.
I've played around a bit without the spherical washers (I don't have the cylindrical blacks ones) but ran into the problem where the Elixir adapter collides with the calipers - the bend/kink in the adapter is maybe like 1mm too close. But that was during my lunch break where I didn't have enough time and patience to properly check the setup and I had to get back to work 👎
