Is my Derailleur positioned correctly ?

Upshift does not work well, downshift is ok, the cable sleeve from derailleur to the frame is a bit short but will that issue alone influence upshift  ?

9 speed old school shimano hg casette

9 speed deore shifters,

RD M771 deraileur.

sram 159 chain

Do i need a different derailleur hanger or only extend the sleeve from Derailleur to frame ?

Or is this setup just not compatible for some reason ?

Yes that seems to be the obvious thing, but it is tight, i pull it with pliers then tighten the deralleur cable bolt after the shifter was shifted into the last gear (smallest casette ring setting)

try this procedire:

  1. shift to smallest sprocket on the rear
  2. wind in the cable tensioner all the way
  3. release cable completely from RD
  4. check alignment in the smallest sprocket. adjust using only the limit screw
  5. reattach cable
  6. set cable tension so that the first upshift is perfect
  7. check the rest of them - should be 100%. small further tension adjustment if not

Cable housing is way too short to the derailleur. Looks like it is pulling the derailleur backwards. Therefore looks like the b gap setting is also out. (Angle of the derailleur looks too far backward, chain not wrapping around the cassette)

I would start by replacing the cable housing to he derailleur.

then before attaching the cable to the derailleur, move it by hand to check that the stop limits are correct and covers the whole cassette.

If stops are correct, attach cable and do indexing.

Thank you sir, exactly as i originally thought, i have taken to the lbs and he immediately replaced with a longercable, fiddled with the derailleur for 20 seconds afterwards and shifting was perfect. thanks for all the support !
