I like to keep it simple, no need to be bombarded with too much numbers, its not going to make your any faster or the ride easier.

For me, racing or a planned ride:
1) Distance as reference, as you know how long the ride is.
2) HR, somewhat know what efforts you're at. This will effect your eat/drink time.
3) Elapsed time, so I know when to drink/eat, I aways forget, or leave it too late.

One can look it the other numbers later and be disappointed 😂😂

I guess it differs from person to person. I love my data. Yes you can argue it doesn’t make a difference, but I would just be lost without it. I use 9 fields on my main screen. If you have been riding like this for almost 20k then you know exactly where to look when you want to know a specific data measurement. The lap page I only use during training or on a long climb during a race. I have a third page, but this only includes data like Time of Day, Vert Ascent, Avg Cadence etc. I don’t use it much except if we stop for coffee.

I find looking at speed/avg speed is the best way to fail your recovery/zone2 rides. When you train with a power meter / do polarized training I think speed data screens are your enemy, except for the races when it's interesting to know the pace (avg speed) to help make the right decisions.

In this instance then I agree, looking at speed and avg speed when trying to stick to zone 2 is a problem, you have to be disciplined. For that I have a different screen that has no indication of speed, just HR, distance, and time of day.

When I am pulling in a bunch I like to make sure that the speed does not increase/decrease when it's my turn.

That's very good for TTT, I normally do "on feel", and sometimes in normal races (not TTT) increase the speed on my turns on purpose 🤣

Interesting thread ....

I may have to have another look at my fields.

When I started out I found my heart rate all over the show, often due to the wrong cadence for the route.  Thus heart rate and cadence became my two primary fields.  I now hardly ever look at my cadence.  Heart rate is important for me ... extended periods of zone 4 and 5 and I am looking at a week off the bike and back at the physio.  (my bust knees only tolerate so much abuse...)

Speed seemed the next logic field, though I use it very seldom ... even less on trails

I use the "time" field.  From here I keep tabs of my ride duration and when I need to eat ....  my next computer will most certainly have an audible alarm for eating times .....  I get caught up in the event, and only realise when my blood sugar drops ..... very stupid for a diabetic.

Elevation and temperature are nice small fields that I glance at every so often.  Nice to know data.

I dont have a power meter ....

I have several pages set up in my garmin.

page 1

all 10 data blocks are occupied

HR : HR Zone

3s Power : power zone

ascent elapsed : time

Average speed  calories

IF : laP

scree 2

whole bunch of power metric

screen3

whole bunch of hr metrics

screen4

interval log

screen 5

navigation screen

screen 6
elevation screen

yeah, pushing power doesn't play nicely with dodgy knees

as for the eating reminder, what about using the lap function? I have confirmed you can only use distance, so on variable terrain, that may not work too well for you.

For this you can use a time or distance alert...

Uhmmmm .... I have never played with the lap function ....  must read up a bit

For the Argus a reminder every 30km will do the trick.

Depending on the terrain (climbing) I would probably go for a 15km reminder off road.

I am fine during training rides.

Both my Garmin (FR 735XT) and Lezyne have reminders to eat/drink. Mine is set to 20-min. I also have a calorie reminder set at intervals of 600.

Reminder set 👍

I will try it at 30 minutes ... just to test the functionality.

I use my Garmin similarly except reminders are at 300 calories and 15min for eating, 20min drinking.

Do you use the same time intervals for road and MTB ?

yes, eating is eating and drinking is drinking

i do change the drink alert for summer and winter though. Winter mode it’s 30min for drinking
