In what and where did the 5 cyclist sit? This was a week away and 3day event and we were more than comfortable on the 200km road trip. But @ChrisF 's suzuki Ertigo takes 3 bikes and 3 riders in comfort. (inside)

There were no cyclists involved, I can't stand them.

Like your way of thinking ....

Bikes INSIDE .... cyclists on the roof rack ....

But wait, there's more ....

15 seconds to remove the bike mount, flip up the seats and you have a 6 seater ....

but wait there's more .....

2nd and 3rd row seats fold FLAT, for a double bed ....

And if you are so inclined, you can pay more and get less of a warantee for the same vehicle, with a TOYOTA badge ......

Bought a Honda jazz 2011 model with a 1.5L engine and only 90 000km on the clock for R115 000. Bought it from webuycars. It is, however, due for a service because of its age.

Great choice. You will not be sorry. We need a 6 month review....

This is my first forum post but I thought it might be insightful.

I am turning 19 in a few months so I relate to the student life. This is my setup, a 2001 swb Mitsubishi Pajero with a custom bike rack. I understand that it is difficult to find one with low km's but they are extremely reliable and a great option if you ride remote trails. They are also fairly safe in collisions. The short wheel base has enough space in the back for two+ bikes (granted you take the bikes apart and fold the seats over) if you prefer transporting your bike in the car.

Might be a bit heavier on fuel and insurance but it's safety aspects justifies it for me.

Not saying this is the best setup for you, just giving out some ideas. Good luck.20221027_075022.jpg.6da2157cf9b7b697cd8bbfd73d0232e7.jpg

See this is where people often make the mistake of feeling safe from actual safety. I don't think I would like to be in an accident in a NCAP 1 star... If you really want to scare yourself go have a look at double cab bakkies crash videos of not that long ago 😳

I agree with you but view it from my perspective. This is my first car (a hand me down, now worth around 120k or less which is right in that student budget) it has 170k km's on the clock and only has one previous owner. Now yes I could have traded it in to buy a Jazz or Polo but then I wouldn't be able to access my local trails or 4x4 and I would have car payments. Not doing my 2 min noodle student diet any good.

Keep in mind, the Pajero gets it's rating due to the lack of auto emergency braking, lane keep assist, driver attention detection ect, nothing I would expect to see in a 22 year old car. The 2001 Gen 3 is also very different from the 2000 Gen 2 you posted but I understand what you are saying. Attached is a ss of a '04 Gen 3 with the same body as mine but updated facelift bumpers.

Again, not saying the Pajero is the best option here. Just explaining my experience and my setup.

Don't Toyota Hiace and Quantum taxis Auto Emergency Braking as standard?

Or was that Random Emergency Braking 🤔😅

Jokes aside, I have a love-hate relationship with all the safe driving smarts. My wife's Volvo XC40 has the Intellisafe system and when driving on narrow suburban roads with plenty of cars parked either side and at low speeds (40kph or less), sometimes the car thinks you're heading for a parked vehicle and deploys its safety smarts by suddenly braking, beeping, and vibrating the steering wheel all at once. Gave me a proper fright first time it happened.

For the most part I've learned to predict when the car may think it needs to intervene (when it really doesn't) and a quick dab of the brakes is enough to calm it down before it freaks out at you.

And I've thought about turning it off, but I figured it may save my life that one time I need it, so I leave it.

Is R120k really the student car budget these days?

We paid R105k for my wife’s Fiat 500 in 2019 (in the year she turned 40). Yes, I know vehicle prices have gone mad in the last 3 years, but fork me…

I can only tell you what types of cars we had at our public high school. The student parking area consisted of the following: assortment of Vw's (City's, Polo's, Jetta's and the odd Gti), older Ford Focus RS, a demo Fiat 500, a demo Mahindra xuv500, Honda Jazz and too many Suzuki S-Presso's😂I counted at least 4.

Most of the cars there were between the 100k-150k mark except the Fiat 500 which was a sport edition so probably closer to 180k-200k and then my friend borrowing his dad's Golf R.

This was mid to end 2022 so I am sure inflation had a role, not only that but supply and demand.

I come from having 4x4's over the last 10 years to a subaru forester. Let me tell you this little awd drive can go just about anywhere a 4x4 can apart from extreme trails where low range is desperately needed. A friend of mine had a awd xtrail and that also went just about anywhere. I liked having the 4x4's and doing some extreme trails, but mtb is enough for me. The trips to cederberg, tankwa, sutherland and various untarred roads are gobbled up by the forester. I def wont be getting another 4x4 and my pocket is breathing better with the lower maintenance and fuel costs.
