Bike for Development rider - buy, swap, or sell?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I look after the Development and Community portfolio for the Wine Lands Cycling Club. One of our Development riders from Nomzamo has a road bike which is too big for him. Size 56, and he is a 50 or 52. It's a Marida Ride with 9 speed Shimano Sora groupset (pics attached). He is hoping to swap it for a smaller bike, or sell it for R3000 and buy a smaller bike. Anyone want to (a) buy this one, or (b) swap, or (c) have a size 50/52 bike you're willing to sell for R3000? 😁

He is super passionate about cycling, and dedicated to his training (rides 3-4 times per week). He was struggling a bit at school so is now taking extra classes. A healthy kid :)

I think the best would be to get a 2nd frame and move the parts across. I will sponsor R500 towards that replacement frame. Whatsapp me on 0*7*2 4*3*7*1*2*5*5 to arrange.

Great idea! I'll get someone to check the groupset and see if it works to do that. Thank you for your generosity! Will be in touch :)

I'll match that donation

Looking Purely At that Saddle Height I would say that the Frame is not too Large.

Dude.......no........it's too large.
Racing setup asks for a 10-15mm drop from top of seat to bars.
The pic shows they are level.

He can go smaller.
Smaller is better = more stiff.

Secondly.
It's a Merida.  So anything else will immediately become better for him for racing, big or small.

Out of pure (ignorance on my part) interest. What would a (semi competitive) bike cost to buy for a rider in this type of situation?

Hard to say... The guys generally take whatever is available at the time. Sometimes great bikes are donated, but most often it's very old bikes, or they go to the likes of Cash Converters and see what they can find. A challenge we're having is that their bikes are very old, with very old groupsets, and so it's becoming impossible to maintain them as we can't find replacement parts (new or second hand).

Off topic-ish. Where can I donate cycling apparel for development riders?

Most bike shops have a "bin" for donations of kit, spares etc. Try your LBS :) Let me know if you don't have any luck with your LBS.

Will this not be a good interim solution for him:

I actually think he'll be able to get that for his frame and fork

This will also be an excellent option:

Thank you! I'm just waiting for Regan to get back to me about his current bike status. His Dad bought him this bike a couple of weeks ago but didn't know about sizes. He's been trying to make a plan on his side too. Will update when I hear back from him.
