as expensive as Morton? when I saw the price I thought what!! R105 for one gel!

I don't see gels on their site, but their race mix is R615 / kg which is very steep.

Also, it's glucose and sucrose which will be super sweet. I guess that is why they recommend not mixing more than 35g per 750ml bottel. Not sure if my race will be ruined by all the bottle swaps or all the pee breaks doing 3+ of these bottels every hour!

I think that recipe is from around 2015 and even though it works well, nutrition has moved on a bit. I just replaced the carbohydrate part with a 1.08:1 maltodextrin: fructose and it works well (I can get up to 120g per hour in like this, but I don't mind sweet stuff). Just add a small amount of oros for flavour.

Highly underrated post (altho the information is widespread).

Im experimenting with making my own gel flask with this mix, tired of using sticky sachets and paying the price for fancy branding.

I've been mixing 2:1 ratio of 40g maltodextrin and 20g fructose in a 750ml bottle. Still need to eat something on slow long ride (4-5 hours)
I need to get a mix right that'll work for a 6 hour high intensity ride, but I'll be limited to 2 bottles and a 1.5l mini mule, otherwise I'll have to stop for water.

Mixing high volumes of malto and fructose seems to need more work than just measuring off the dosages, add water and shake...
What do you guys do to get the stuff to dissolve at higher volumes per bottle?

In 2025 new products are coming out at 1:1 as there is no significant advantage to 1.08:1. Table sugar is 1:1. Add salt and citric acid and you have a perfect mix for bottles or gels. Buy a gel flask and the ingredients are so cheap is basically free sports nutrition.

I have tried the sugar mix recipe. My only issue was replacing the electrolytes and salt lost through sweat. Adding salt to the mixture throws the taste off for me. I also battled to stomach the sugar mix, especially on rides longer than 3.5 hours. It was just too sweet.

Made a potent gel in a soft flask as well, with a shot of espresso. But still, just too sweet for me after 3 hours.

So I am back on the maltodextrin products.

On another note, I am really battling to gauge my fluid intake from my USWE pack. Any tips? I end up drinking too little from the pack, due to  fear of running out of drink too soon. Just due to the fact that I cannot see how much is left in the USWE. My plan is to measure how much "a sip" is for me and then time the intake. But that seems like al ot of hassle.

Did you add citric acid? To me it’s an essential ingredient.

I used lime  juice

Im also struggling to gauge this. What i do is to double up on mix in my bottle. Just as to not throw drink mix into my bladder to help with keeping it clean. so my mix is as follows

Cadence nutrition Carbo Fuel. 2x bottle mix per bottle. 2 bottles on bike. 1.5L of water in bladder. so i try and drink 1/2 bottle fluid(1 bottle/1h worth of mix) and 350ml 1/4 of bladder per hour. That gives me 4 hours worth of nutrition and fluid

I supplement that with 1x far/fast bar per hour or the new USN isogel flavourless with caffeine( It tastes JUST like the old breaktrough gels of the late 90s)
