To sell or upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hi.

My bike is currently for sale but im undecided. Its the Merida below. Bike rides like new. Thinking of upgrading to 1 x 11 and perhaps a spray to another color. Is it really worth it or best to sell and spend the extra to get the spec i want? My bike currently has premium components and a top shock set but obviously not 1 x 11.

Very nice bike, question is, how often do you ride and what kind of riding do you do? are you planning on racing?

How much cash are you willing to spend on a new bike?

Are these premium components in the room with us right now?

Sell this, put in extra cash and get a TR cypher

Thanks. I only ride on the weekends and only about 40km but proper bush. I don't race and only social ones at the moment.  My budget is 23k for a used one but obviously banking on my sale funds.

yes i understand its not to todays standards but ride premium despite the age. Bike has been on sale for a bit but struggling to get sold.  Anything less and not worth it to sell. Only time will tell.

Keep the bike as is and ride it till the wheels fall off. With the amount of riding you do it will not be worth getting new components or a better bike. Once the current groupset is done you can look to upgrade to a 1x11 but I would keep it as it is and just enjoy it.

The conversion to 1x11 is super easy and not that expensive with Bikehub parts. It even looks like your current derailer have a clutch but not 100% clear. I had a Scott Genius, sold it and put some moola in the kitty to get a Trek Top Fuel 7, I can tell you, I miss the Scott (and the cash I laid out on the new bike)

Contact Rapide regarding the 1x conversion.  A friend bought the parts (spacers, chain ring) from Rapide and we did the conversion ourselves.

That there is telling. If a bike doesn't "do it for you" in the "looks" department then no matter what upgrades you throw at it you will always want to tinker and change something. Off load it.

PS: The market is very depressed and it is a buyers market. If you upgraded it and then listed it it will sell quicker.

If I have it right your bike is about 10 years old - will be a tough sell at the price you are looking for even though the condition is good. Bike geometry have improved a lot over the decade. You either are going to take a knock on the asking price or like the others said, ride it till the wheels fall off. I would say that bike is perfectly fine for social rides, you don't need to invest more.
