Riding through the night is an amazing experience. Deeply meditative. I love it, especially alone.

The first time I did it was on the 36one. Dawn over the rooiberg showed me how they were named and is imprinted on my mind as a lifetime memory.

I want to ride through the night sometime in the future.

Have done a sunrise to sunset ride, would like to do a sunset to sunrise ride, there is something very different about riding alone in the dark.

A 4x4 gem .... they would not let me do it on the MTB (2019) ....

 

Matjiesvlei Farm ... coming from Ladismith, about 2km before Calitzdorp.

 

They have a 4x4 route that takes you to the TOP of a koppie.  Here you find directional arrows to each of the mountain ranges around you .... and you can SEE why each got its name.

 

Did it back in 2008, still vividly clear in my memory.

So, thanks again all for the great comments.

I did a 12-hour solo night ride in the Cederberg, starting and ending at the Cederberg Oasis.

Was a pretty magical experience, and the extreme isolation was really humbling.  What a night though; some big skies.
