Buying a Race Entry = A Lifetime of Spam Calls

here's the thing though, about 2 years back I got my eldest daughter a cellphone contract, within a week of being activated she started receiving spam, both by call and sms. The number was not even given out to family yet, let alone strangers.

Couple of years back I took out a data contract with MTN, literally only used it to log my home PC onto the internet. Not once called or sms'ed from that number. Also within weeks I started receiving spam on that number (can't say about calls as it was never connected to a phone). Quite a few from the spams were from local CPT businesses so I suspect its someone connected to the shop that gave out the number.

On a side note, phone numbers can be recycled back into the network. This means your number might have been used by someone else in the past before being reassigned to you - so the previous owner could have done all sorts of things with it.

Yes, I get account balances from the previous owner, mostly via SMS.

Once bought a SIM in dubai since i was going to spend 6 weeks there…. Same thing, recycled number and a Pakistani family frantically trying to get hold of the previous owner of the number. It got so bad that i ended up chucking it and roaming instead.

on a related note and targeted marketing calls: try this.

Mine have significantly decreased since i registered my number here. Some still slip through, but i just manually block anything and everything as far as i can.

This works great, but checking my details now it seems you have to refresh this every 3 years. So worthwhile to check and update if it has been a while.

The real solution to this problem isn’t just putting a bandage on it by installing Truecaller. It’s ensuring that race organizers don’t force participants to submit their private details, only to sell them to marketing companies for profit. The goal here is to push for a petition that requires every company selling race entries to respect anonymity and privacy."
