does anyone use these whilst they are out and about?

strava beacon - https://www.bikeradar.com/news/strava-beacon-relaunch

garmin live track - https://support.garmin.com/en-ZA/?faq=HbqxxbiBGA3mDhlLX4GUw8

NSRI safetrx  -https://www.nsri.org.za/water-safety/safetrx/ (watersports focussed, but can be for running/hiking too)

This was prompted by seeing adds for a paid service - https://dotwatch.co.za/, R56 pm for something that is free seems like a weird business model. unless I'm missing something.

Apple Find My, Garmin LiveTrack,

all in a dual sim phone (EmptyN & WoudaCom). Reception can be spotty in places).

Incident detection activated on Garmin activated (it does work, even if you just suddenly reduce speed to zero, aka puncture).

Fall detection activated on Apple Watch (seems more arm specific than anything else)

Garmin Livetrack ... Yes there are very occasional times it doesn't work but the majority of time, for me, it's good enough

I've got 2 issues with Garmin livetrack that make it unreliable.

1) occasionally Garmin does an update and turns live track autostart off or it simply does not start automatically like it should. (to be fair this has not happened for a long while)

2) it relies on connection to your smart phone. I make a habbit of checking the pairing with my phone and even do a synch before riding, but on many occasions I'll get back from my ride and the 2 are no longer paired. Whether this is a garmin or iphone issue I dont know.

because of the above, the wife will sometimes tell me she had to use Find My to see where I was because live track did not work.

I use a Samsung phone, not an iSheep 🤪, as I say in most cases I'm ok with it .... The odd occasion it loses connection I can live with 😎

I started using the Life 360 App which I run permanently in the background.  Because I commute on a motorcycle and usually ride solo on the bicycle it's a great way for the Mrs to check where I am.  The Life 360 App also has the functionality of a SOS button in case of emergency where it link through to an operator without the need to make a call - hit the SOS and it calls automatically.  Great App - as long as you have cellular coverage.
