Hi
My wife and I have just arrived in Cape Town from Vancouver Canada for a 3 month holiday. We are avid road bikers and have brought our bikes with us and are looking to join a club to ride with likeminded folks that enjoy social rides and community participation.
We will be staying in Llandudno area.
Thanks
Chris

Thinking of other clubs as well

Welcome, ChrisT - I am in HOUT BAY, next suburb along, and commute just 1x per week into work, and do not belong to a (cycling) club, but if you and your Mrs pop over 1 evening  after work, we can have a beer, and I can give you a useful, verbal ‘lay of the land’, and you will get MANY suggestions from this crowd, too.

Chat then

Hi Chris

Welcome to Cape Town

You chose a perfect  location for your stay. From there you can cycle both North and South on some of the most scenic routes anywhere. Southwards through Hout Bay, over Chapmans Peak Drive and as far as Cape Point before turning back, makes for a fantastic route.

The Pedal Power Association has a regular Saturday morning group ride with 3 different distances to choose from, but they start in Mowbray, a suburb some way away from where you will be staying. Still, it may be a great way to meet a very diverse group of cyclists.

There are several cycling clubs in Cape Town and nearly all of them have regular Saturday or Sunday morning group rides. I don't belong to any of them, but I'm sure some members will recommend good rides before too long.

Enjoy Cape Town, and watch out for our biggest "hill" ....... the southeasterly wind! (It makes you strong)

I will explain to the 'Llandudno Chris' not to turn left and then cycle past Ocean View, direction Scarborough, but rather proceed on to Kommetjie (if riding around the Peninsula...), and rather go over SLANGKOP (as I myself do), thus avoiding that hijacking hotspot.

Cheers

Chris

Hey Chris,

Been going through the process of enjoying this myself.

Two groups I can suggest:

  • East City Cycles - leave from their store in town at 5:30 on Fridays. Great shop too, if you need spares etc.
  • Secondly, South Side Cycles leaves from Constantia Emporium or Tokai. More community-based, more female-oriented too, but very welcoming to all.

Welcome. A long time ago I rode a bike from Vancouver to Whitehorse(using the Alaskan marine highway).

Reckon you should try jump onto a Double Century team this weekend. there will be loads looking for extra riders last minute.

What's the DC? don't ask silly questions, just do it!

Southside is a great call, highly recommended
