Getting the damp stench out of cycling shoes

If you are married, then this is ONLY for very BRAVE guys:

Remove the insoles from your cycling shoes and wash shoes and insoles in the dishwasher like they are crockery. Smells gone, bacteria gone, possibly wife gone, then stuff with dry newspaper to wick up moisture and dry properly in the sun.

I am the dishwasher in this house, so no go.

 

but, wont the heat in the non human dishwasher cause issues with the shoes ?

For some sh!t$ and giggles go buy a new toilet brush and shove it in the dishwasher when you know wifey is about to unpack it. Guaranteed $h1t-fest of note.

The past weekend in the Eastern Free State, trying to get stuff dry after being caught in some rain the afternoon, needing shoes, helmet, etc the next weekend. Late evening I took the newspaper out, and swapped it heel to toe. Shoes were dry the next morning

Happy to report that after yesterdays sun and some more bicarbonate the stench is back down to normal levels. 
 

Will give them a wash on Sunday anyway as I’m not riding Monday, so they’ll have a good amount of time to dry.

I use some large silica gel bags I bought at Cape Union Mart. Zap them in the microwave (without shoes) for 4min to dry them out and insert into the shoe to absorb moisture. Dries out the shoe quickly and then just repeat the radiation treatment till shoe is bone dry. Takes the smell with them. 
 

disclaimer: wife may ask you why the microwave smells cheesy .

standard ans: I warmed a few slices of margherita coated with Parmesan and walk away dismissively and important, confidently 

any weakness will result in you being called back to the kitchen and have your face fastidiously scrutinised for unknown wrinkles that may indicate a healthy dose of taking the pissniss
