Help with MTB bike

hi all

 

I need some advice on mtb bikes. I've been a roadie for a while now doing it mainly to keep fit for my motorbike. But lately I have been thinking that i might as well ride mountain bike to keep fit as there are allot of cross pollination of skills between MTB and enduro bikes.

 

So got a few Q's:

Is full suspension necessary?

What would i have to spend to get a good quality bike that i wont get bored of quickly and can do a few races in?

What size should i be looking at? (I'm 1.86m and 93kg's)

Would you guys recommend buying second hand or go new from the start?

Don't want to start a brand war, but recommended brands?

Raleigh for light riding , Morewood for more serious stuff .

The bike that fits is the one that is right for you. Don't look at brands. All the brands don't have all the sizes.

 

A hardtail is fine to start out with. You can get a really good hardtail for a the same prace you get a crappy full suspension. Look for the best possible suspension. It's the most expensive part on the bike.

I also do both enduro and mtb. I would recommend a full sus bike. Nothing wrong with second-hand, just have it checked out first.

Full suspension is good (if you can afford it)

New they go for about R15000 upwards

Brand loyalty is your own choice, there are many, from Kona (duh) mongoose, raleigh, felt, Orbea, ext ext. 

Disc brakes a must

Deore is minumum, though LX and XT are nice (XTR is sponsorware)

Go tubeless (even ghetto tubeless)

 

Ride at Groenkloof on saterdays and sundays

Probably large, but suggest you a bike fit done when you buy.

Get new as then you can negotiate a bike fit into the deal.

 Buy a product from a distributor that will provide back up on the new product.

Go for a hard tail,      brands with longer top tubes like , Scott and GT... more comfort on longer rides . As for shox..... if ur a heavy rider, duel air , rock shox reba, stay away from fox..... costs x 3 to fix is something breaks

Just bought a Giant Anthem 1. Came from a hardtail with very little experience. Must say that the Giant offered the best value for money from a large reputable manufacturer, to my eyes anyway.  Also liked the Silverback, but 5k more.

If you go 'soft' then Commencial have specials at the moment. Mate and I both bought last month and did Trans B over the weekend. What a ride!
