Spidy, spidy, spidy - driving a car is NOT endagenring your life, it is his right as a citizen of the country (as yours) to drive on the roads - how he drives is not for you or me to decide - it remains his right.

In any event who says he drove negligently - nowhere have I read that - but even if he did, its not up to 6 young cyclists to change his habits - report him to the authorities, take the number do whatever, there is more than enough violence and aggression in the country without condoning this senseless,  irresponsible and animal like behaviour.

Just because some cyclists feel their rights are impinged by bad drivers, some drivers feel their rights are impinged by poor cycling habits - its not anybodies right to take action on their own, that is mobster behaviour, be it cyclists, runners, drivers, taxis whatever, there are rules and clear regulations, act within them, and dont expect mercy if you act outside of these (as these mobsters did) by the authorities.

If we all just take matters into our own hands, what dos this say about us as god fearing, law abiding, honest citizens - it serves no purpose, and we will just descend into anarchy.

BEELD' date=' thanks for fuelling an already unstable and volitile situation on our roads.  Sleep well tonight on a job well done.

Exactly why they have ample opportunity to publicly give further particulars in relation to the facts contained in the article... and I'm still waiting...!!!

This incident makes me feel less safe cycling in B'view, which is a pain as I live there.

Pantani was right (strangely enough) a few pages back.  You do something and there are consequences, it doesn't end with the guy getting knocked around.

Violence turns the heat up in the relationship between cyclists and cars - this is a bad thing.

i truly do not believe for a single millisecond that this "oupa" was innocent. what the cyclists did was wrong though - they should rather have grabbed him and frog-marched him to the local cop-shop and laid formal charges for whatever it was that he had done, and only THEN f'd him up privately afterwards (seeing as they knew where he worked)

well said bateleur about the double standards of the law.... i wonder if the pathetic media in this country will even notice that discrepancy though (ie that drivers who deliberately kill and injure cyclists don't even get a slap on the wrist and yet now these guys who had clearly been pushed beyond reason and into a state of temporary insanity will have to bear consequences for simply giving a deserved hiding to an $%^&hole)

Why would they fourbar.  A newspaper is about sensationalism!!!  Why should they now publish something that might influence people to buy their paper!

guess the cyclists are just following the examples set by them by the south african society - Guess they can't beat society so they joined them.

Welcome to south africa, where a life is worth R5, cellphone, and best of all just because you felt like taking it.

Root of this problem is the lack of law enforcement.  Had the law been enforced on all road users and action been taken on everybody that does not obey.  We would not have had this problem.  But in  this country there are two things you don't do, speeding and parking on the wrong spot.  Rest of the time, it is a free for all.  You can run over cyclists with your car, etc with no repocusions for that.  You can drive in a drunken state into a group of cyclists killing two, what happens .... nothing.

Chances are however that they will prosecute them.   I just wish that motorist would be charged the same way these will be.

That is a perception Bateleur, not a fact - motorists ARE charged the same as any body else.

The fact is, the wheels of the law turn very slowly, and often its difficult to prove a case in court where you need more provable facts than we do here on the Hub, so the perception is nobody is prosecuted, but its not true.

One of the runners killed in Bedfordview in March was a personal friend of mine, I am angry and hurt that to this day nobody has been prosecuted and sentanced in court, but the case is building, the accused is out on bail and court dates are set for the future.

Will he get off??

I dont know, maybe, BUT THATS NOT FOR US TO DECIDE, he has a right to a fair trial and defense - we cannot just start to take the law upon ourselves because we feel aggrieved - this is a civilised country and the sooner we start to act like that the better.

They sell their paper in public, surely they know how to participate in a public internet forum...?

Ahh please, do you really think Beelds/or any other Paper /Media are gonna want to hear what cyclists say about this? They want the sensation, the story, to sell, to make money. And what is a better way to get the publics attention by writing "Oupa beaten up by 6 cyclists" Not oupa (probarly wanted to drive over the cyclist) got beaten up. Not cyclists almost got killed by Oupa. hmmmmm?????????? Let me tell you, tomorrow, everyone would have forgotten about "Oupa"(who went for target practive in his 4x4/BMW/Merc etc), and try and run more cyclists over.

Can't agree with that. Its only civilised for certain people, most possibly the Zumas, Guarded goverment officials... and the like. Civilisation stops dead in its tracks when you're the minority...

 Nope ... FACT.

Sister in law knocked of her bike while she was at school on the pavement.  Reported but nothing done about it.  Police looked at it and just closed it.

Brother in law hit by a car cycling from technikon home.  Went over the bonnet of the car.  Motorist fled the scene.  Someone put chase after him and got the plate numbers.  POLICE DID NOTHING AGAIN.  Took up the ranks to no avail.
