I am getting a removable tow-bar fitted to my (new shape) Toyota Corolla. It will have a goose neck, so there will not be any backing plate. I now need a dependable 2-3 bike carrier that will attach to the ball of the towbar. My first choice currently is the Thule RideOn 9402/9403. hagar Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 i got a hang on hold fast works like a charm on the wife's little peugeot107 and my 407 no need for a tow bar and it cost r750 excactly same design as the thule but alot cheaper !!!
trailrider Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 The Ride On is less expensive than the G5 range and as good. I'd suggest you rather get the 9403 as opposed to the 9402 'cause it carries two bikes far enough apart to not have to invest in pool noodles.I alsohave the Hang On 972 which is so good if I only have two bikes and just want to go for a short drive on good roads, but the RideOn is still king. Contact Thule for a dealer in your area, I see Kroonstad has a distributor and I know that some 4x4 shops also carry stock and are well priced at times. Happy trails
Jaco Steyn Posted September 9, 2008 Author Posted September 9, 2008 I see that Hagar has also recommended the HoldFast range. I am also looking at the Holdfast Sprint. This one is about R1000 less expensive than the Thule. Does anyone have any major concerns or gripes about the HoldFast range?

D-R, if you're referring to my canoe rack then it is actually a Thule rack that did not really "holdfast" The main bars are Thule and it is only the canoe wedges that are Holdfast. In defence of both companies though, the rack works perfectly on the car it was made for and it is only when we tried to make it fit your bakkie that it didn't work so well. I've had a Holdfast bike rack in the past (hang-on) and now have the Thule Ride-On. Both Thule and Holdfast are good in my opinion. The Ride-On is one of the best cycling purchases I've ever made.

It folds up really flat so that you can just keep it in your boot or behind the seat of your bakkie. I got mine from an online store called LifeStyleMD http://www.lifestylemd.com/index.asp?GoTo=fetch&afid=1&pt=products&itemid=192&typeid=128. The rack was delivered to my office and was R100 cheaper than buying it from the Thule shop in Woodmeade, plus I never had some shop assistant telling me I really should be going for the 3-bike carrier...

Sequoia Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 I have the Holdfast ride-on type and I'm quite happy with it. It has withstood quite a bit of abuse over some really corrugated gravel roads, and came out without a problem. I must add that I've modified it a bit to ensure that it won't release unintentionally, by locking the two knobs together and I don't use the factory-provided straps. Thule is the best, but you pay for it. In my case it was just not worth it.

I will go and have a look at the selection available and look at build quality. I can get the HoldFast Sprint 2 bike model for ?R2200. I see however in the link provided by Super mil that I can get the Thule Ride On 9402 (2 bike) carrier from them for R2299 which is only R100 more. I did not check about their delivery charges, but maybe I should go for this option?

Gman1834 Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 I have one like the Hold fast ride on, i must say the ride on is a must, no need to take of wheels or hanging on the top tube scratching the paint. The Tule look very nice, i would love having one, but at that price, ill stick with my rack. Check the junk mail for bike racks you can get a bargain!
