I get the same kind of response riding on my Unicycle. The MTB riders always greet and some even stop to chat to find out more about MUni. The road guys and just people out on the road in general don't greet much if at all, and a lot sort of stare at me as to say "WTF!!", and not in a good way either.

Then again I don't really care cos I spend most of my riding time off-road in the forest Smile

Now is the time thousands of Cape "cyclists" dust off their bikes, pull on those Totalsports helmets, saggy znuggles pants (with underwear) and weave all over the road on their squeeky bikes. Yes its Argus training time again.

To greet these gems of the cycling fraternity is not only a risk to their own health, but also fellow road users as lifting a few fingers off the bar or even nodding will send them swerving all over the road. The first response is normally "hold your line" as you go past them anyway.

If I'm riding in a remote place, and another rider comes along, I would say Hi, but to greet every single person you pass who happens to be on a bike is just annoying. Why must you greet everyone? Just because they happen to be on a bike doesnt make you friends. Do you walk around the shopping mall and greet every person you pass? No. Just 'cos we're all on bikes doesnt mean we're part of this secret club or brotherhood. This isnt the military, or boy scouts. Maybe people just wanna ride, and not have to crack a fake 'Hi' every 30 seconds.

So you can't blame the roadies, it's maybe just the fact that with most MTB we are in remote places, where seeing another person is kinda cool in a way.

You may be correct about roadies, I am one. But do not be slow on single track. The other day in Majic I thought WTF with the comments of the gungho's coming past or catching me from behind, on their shiny full sussers.

As a "poefter roadie", I try to greet everyone within reason. If I see ya forst, I'll wave first. If you wave first and I see ya, I'll wave back, unless it isgonna cause me to lose my balance and wobble and weave all over the road.

However, I do have to say that at most time while I'm out riding, I don't often see other riders 'cause I'm just too busy concentrating on what I'm doing.

So if you don't see me wave back, it aint personal, has nothing to do with your rig or if you are friend or foe.

I do think all cyclists belong to this "secret brotherhood" and maybe we aint all friends, but we are all doing the same thing and that gives us common ground and a good reason to be polite to one another.

Just smile and wave, or was that a grimace?

Nope, I don't agree with this at all. Yes, be polite, I agree, but just 'cos someone gets his/her hands on a bike doesn't make you part of some sort of brotherhood. Sure, we have a common interest, but I really see it as futile and painful to have to say "Hi"...."Hi"..........."Hi"...................................."Hi"..."Hi"........"Hi"........"Hi"........................................................."Hi"

When you go to the mall to shop, you could say that is a brotherhood too. A brotherhood of shoppers. We all have a common interest, shopping. And when I go to the movies, I would expect every person I see to greet me too. We are after all part of a brotherhood of movie lovers. Don't get me started on the public loos thing either. There we are also part of a brotherhood. We all have a common interest there. It would be polite to greet every fellow pisser at the urinals, and compliment the person's fart if it's a good oneWink
