and when something breaks under warranty. where do u go?

I think this excuse is used far to often to protect local retailers. Often foreign retailers deal better with warranty issues than the locals. In some cases they will only require a photo of the problem and then a photo of the item after it has been destroyed and they send the part, no further questions asked.

not to line someone pockets with an extra 13k.

Where do you get R13k difference?

If I look at the numbers I get:

Base price: ?4,037.00

Less UK VAT @ 17.5%: ?3,435.74

Convert @ R15.21/? (Today's Visa rate with typical 2.75% bank charge): R52,257.65

Add 15% customs duty for complete bike: R60,096.25

Add 14% VAT assessed on value + 10%: R69,230.88

This gives me a difference of R4k before I've even thought about shipping charges, agents fees etc.

Also note that to legally bring in shipments over R20k/year you need to be registered as an importer with SARS.

My "attitude" is just realistic dude.  Import away if it gives you a warm and mushy feeling but I think a few people might agree with me that bitching and moaning is actually counter productive

Don't see it as bitching Nancy. Retailers should see it as a warning not to milk the consumer for all he/she is worth.

I shopped for a Selle Italia Gel Flow saddle: a major cycle shop in SA is selling it for R1800. I'm currently buying it overseas for R750.  (and those guys are making a profit from that R750!)

The mark up on cycling goods in SA is ridiculous.

Ag who cares man. I got taken for a ride this morning, loved it. On my overpriced, fancy schmancy, million  squadbazillion Zim dollar bike. Whomped ass.

This is, stuff sells for what the market will bear.

i can kinda understand why threads like these have gotten up nancy's nose. it's not just cycle shops who are ripping us us. look at how the prices of even the most basic of goods - milk, fruit juice, bread - have gone up in the last coupla months.

I would so love to do that. Imagine jumping on the stays of a R20 000 Cervelo wearing army boots.

I think maybe we live in a culture of paranoia where the big mean evil retailer is out to get us.  The bigger picture is that the local bike shops are businesses just like Spar and Checkers.  I'm sure I can probably buy 2litres of milk in the USA for $1.50 but by the time I've paid my import duties, shipping and other overheads it'll probably cost me 3 or 4 dollars by the time it's on the shelf.  So I save myself the hassle and buy my milk at my local Spar.

This debate is like any other where it's easy to judge as an outsider because you don't necessarily have all the experience that the retailer possibly has.

which doesnt help much when my rear derailler breaks. fine they send me a new one. which i have to wait a few days for and pay postage. then I have to take it to the LBS and ask them to put it on and pay them to do so.

6 months down the line my front break lever spring breaks. what now?

You really should consider using better quality components. Wink

it doesnt matter what components you use. if you clock big miles (say 400km a week), your campy record / dura ace/ sram red is going to start giving sh*t after 6 months or so. at least campy is serviceable where DA isnt

and learn to work on your own bike...  Fitting a derailleur isn't exactly rocket science.

but if i'd bought it locally I wouldnt have to. fixing a computer isnt rocket science either. and yet most people dont do it - they take it to specialists

Consider as well that the cycling industry like many others locally, often fall under European distribution.

Sweet irony, most of the stuff docks here before continueing to Europe, whereby it gets distributed back here, resulting in increased shipping and insurance costs.

China is one of the few who will ship directly to SA and will consider SA the direct distribution channel for Southern adn sub saharan Africa.
