So I need to bleed my shimano brakes, stop in at a bike shop and ask for a bleed kit, yesssir that will be R1200.00! WTF. No thanks, get a piece of 3mm plastic tube R1.50 and an empty plastic bottle and Bob's in bed with my auntie.

This is the kit in the pic above, check it out on the web this am available in the states for $54.00! How the fu@k do shimano in SA justify these sort of prices?

No way!!! Thats insane. Wonder if my cousin should get me a kit when they go to the USA next month?? At that price it would be worth it.

Last time I checked the Avid bleed kit was only R200-300 bucks. Better just to get the lbs to do it.

Go to the chemist. By two syringes and some tubing and bobs your uncle.

I don't want him to be my uncle. smiley11.gif

Alligator bleed kits are also about R300, comes with bits for most brakes.

Get a surgical tube and a little plastic bag and a syringe.

The syringe will get all the fluid from bottom to top quickly, assuming the system is completely drained.

From there take the syringe off and attach the bag with an elastic band to the tube (don't forget to close the bleed nipple)

Then bleed the brake as normal so that you get all the air bubbles out.

Re: you will need to buy a 7mm. spanner.

My advice for now.

There will soon be a flood of answers and some seriously complicated ones too smiley36.gif smiley36.gif

For what it's worth, I have one of those bleed kits and it's not that good (Sorry Steve)

Rather take it to your LBS' date=' then then there will be no serious complications.[/quote']

Well this is how it started, at the lbs with the shimano bleed kit, which left air in the system and subsequentially poor brakes at sani2c. Best to feed fluid in to the reservoir at the top with a bleed bottle at the bottom and the bike at an angle keeping the hose in an upright posistion. Took 10 min and it was sorted.

I also cable tied my no board to the brake lines which caused the front brakes to leak and so had no front brakes at all!! Made for a very interesting decent down into the umko valley.

But I am still learning this game called cycling. This weeks task, how to take care of saddle sores, I hear good things about Fucidine (spelling).

I paid R330 for my Shimano Bleed Kit 18months ago. Even with a 30% price hike it still does not amount to R1200-00

 Highway robbery that is

For saddle sores you should try the baby bum cream you get at the local supermarket.

For bleeding of disc brakes just be careful. Some makes (Hayes I think for one) have different fluids. Some of those fluids are extremely corrosive and do bad things to good paint jobs.

I used exactly that technique and it worked a treat - I was a complete novice at the time and it took 20 mins - brakes are sharp and progressive.

bleed kits are a waste of time and money

I'm not sure you can blame Shimano SA though - chat to the Coolheat guys and they will recommend the syringe/hose method because the kit is so expensive.

No need to slander them because you're getting ripped off. You never know what Shimano SA are getting the product for or how much your LBS is ripping you off....
