You can go fixed with drop outs like these commonly found on older geared bikes

 

Only with a bolt axle...not QR.

It is my belief that the velodrome rule dates back to long

before the invention of the quick-release, when the choices were

standard nuts or wing nuts. The protruding "wings" of wing nuts might

constitute a hazard in a crash, and I believe that's why the rule was

instituted. Since quick-release skewers don't have any sharp

projections, that becomes a non-issue in practice.

I've had personal experience with the QR moving in a horizontal dropout. No matter how tight it was. With a normal bolt axle it never happend.

its great......been 15 years since I rode steel.......am very happy so far......rigid fork went on the geared bike, so I''m screwed either way......

I still have the rigid fork on mine and love it. It even handles gap jumps and the BMX track!!

 

Going to put a carbon rigid fork on it though !
