At no point have I said do away with the Qing / current system of voting - but I have suggested that the IEC should also develop an online vote system - I would expect that between 5 and 10 million people will would choose to cast their vote in this manner in 5 years time. If you don't have running water or if you may feel intimidated by an on line vote you will still be able to vote in the current manor.

Of course they didnt' date=' nowhere in the world do they, there will always be issues and enquiries, but at least we followed a recognised and approved international system of voting where checks and balances are tried and tested, where the basis of one man one vote is enforced by marking systems, where no 12 year old kid can make a vote, where no votes can be sold and so on.

Its not necessary to re-invent the wheel.

Pretty much my sentiments as well.

Took me all of 25 minutes, not including the ride I incorprated into my voting excursion.

I agree with scotty: a touch screen on-line voting at the stations. Once the final vote is cast, the results are up immediately.

At our voting station on the  East Rand, I was dotted with a normal marker on my thumb nailConfused, I only received provincial form, when I asked where my national form is, the dude handed me two more provincial forms.

The voting boxes are unsealed board boxes. It's the best recipe for corruption.

And what's up with 'voting at any station'? People who don't even stay in the area, have a say in our ward/province.

A electronic system would be insane.  The US system is riddled with code security issues, things can be changed without it being logged anywhere, the company is headed by a major Republican donor, and the Master key for the system was successfully made based on a pic on the companies website.

Now, for the end users. I share my office with pc techies, and I've seen that users are getting anything but more intelligent.

Add in the lack of infrastructure, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Look, i'm all for technological advancements.

but so far, there has yet to be a foolproof unhackable e-voting system.

when one comes around, great... but until then...

Well its seems most people have accepted they will have to Q!

But why not as 2nd process in each booth have a template electronic pad which you put your unfolded voting paper on and make your mark which is recorded in ink and electronically? Thus allowing for the electronic unofficial vote to be announced almost immediately after all polling stations have close. While the official result would still be counted in the normal manor - with a bit of luck they would almost (95%) match!

Two down side:

1. You would have to fold you own paper after casting your vote.

2. Their would need to be separate booths for the 2 different votes.

My wife and I were talking about this while standing in the queue for 2hrs!

I think the fundamental problem with voting via the internet would the lack of anonymity.  Someone somewhere could work out who you voted for..  Probably not a huge concern for most people, but if you had nut like Bob Mugabe as your president, I not sure I would like the idea of him being able to find out that I didn't vote for him?  <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Geez...you vote every 4/5 years. Standing in a Q wont kill you.

Apparently it canLOL

Voter dies in waiting queue

A fifty-five-year-old man collapsed and died at the Nateko polling station.

IF CNBC is to believed it sound like SA may have electronic voting, as used currently in India for the next elections. This means that once voting stations are closed results should be out within 3 hours!
