Why do you race on a training ride???

We tend to have set sections on our route where we race. these often get repeated. one section is a 12% uphill for 250m followed by a 9% for 400m. We race up and then idle down, repeating this five times. or we sprint a 4% that is about 500m long, but it follows two shorter 6% section. theracing is definitely on and the winner gets the bragging rights. The rest of the ride is social and fun. even slow riders get to spend quite a bit of time with the guys and get massive amounts of input and praise for improvement.

ever considder it could be one of those manly girls? Hehehe, maybe she was trying to show you how manly she can try and be. . . Sometimes they have a bit of overgrowth body hair to prove the extra testo is there. Good just to ignore the incident and enjoy ur own ride.

I find the whole thing pretty pathetic as well to be honest.

Makes me think they have spent too long in the sun and its cooked their brain.

No' date=' just testostrone, but then as a male it is a good to have some.

Methinks its more Ego and Posturing than testosterone, but hey, each to his own.

Why do people thinks they need to prove themselves to me if I don?t even know them and to top all of it why race when you are training?

Can someone please fill me in on this type of behavior?

I am not someone who is a pro or a wannabee pro but just a social female mtb rider. I went out for a training ride on Sunday morning. On my way back just before going up a small little uphill I passed a few other mtb riders (just by keeping my rhythm). Suddenly one of the girls that I just passed started to chase me down wanting to race me. Confused

<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I find this ridiculous.

Is this a common thing that happens around cyclists as this is not the first time I came across a situation like this where it is an ego hunt / chase to the top of the hill.

Why do people thinks they need to prove themselves to me if I don?t even know them and to top all of it why race when you are training?

Can someone please fill me in on this type of behavior?

Just another thought on this one, the joke is on them if they charge past you and stop at the top of the hill LOL, especially if you just keep to your rhythm and do not take the bait. They may have won the battle but they have not won the war. It is just as easy to get caught up in some petty dices during a race but these people end up paying the price later on. Good to learn to ignore these people during training, makes it easy to do the same during races.

With province champs around the corner, every club training ride lately seems to be a race !!! Dead

It happens because no cyclist wants/likes to be passed.

You will always try and stay with the passer by, even if it means that the rest of your ride is way too fast or you blow and then you ride way too slow back home.

Seeing another cyclist ahead of you, you think, if I can catch him, I can have an easier ride, I will feel great - even if its just for a couple of secs.

Me thinks it has alot to do with the male ego, on the female side, not too sure?

This is really irritating behavior, why cant people just stay behind me then I wont need to chase them down?..<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

My wife says it?s a male thing but the OP seems to have disproved this ? Thank you.

Racing all the way - the only way you better yourself. Alternate between hilly routes and flats - this way you train climbing to the max and also sprinting/ time trialing.

Get a buddy who is a bit stronger than you this way you always need to push hard. The best is to ride with strong older guys who race vets etc - they will never back down and race all the way., so this way you get maximum training. This is really the best and only way.

The week before the race - well do chill rides just to loosen the legs a bit and keep all the energy on level - if you don't ride the nerves and excitement get to you and then your cooked - no way to think and do a smart race.

RACING in training is the way to go - You only improve yourself

This is something I am known to moan about on our morning rides. Even though I am sure it's nothing as bad as E2E our rides are either going much faster or I am just getting worse. I am planning to start my own morning "C" group as anything else is too fast for me...

An article from Bicycling springs to mind....it was an interview with the Van der kitten chick....yes the one that we've seen gazillion pics of....if memory serves correct she said how her toughest training days are the days that she must go slow....

I had a mate who would only train flat out. No matter where you went, or what hill it was up we went b@ll$ out. I hated it. I'd usually just sit up when it got too hard and let him carry on.

Strange thing is that he never beat me in an actual race. He was always too tired.

Seems I did benefit from the intensity...but even more so by knowing when to just go easy!

Its like the early morning sat/sun groups out on the Lido...whats up with the sprint to the stop street?!

I also have a mate like this.. I only invite him for a ride when Im doing interval/ hard training days..

He would MOTOR up annything when Im stil cold 10 mins into a ride, right from the gun, then normally 30 km later he would have to go home cause he dont feel so well- haha I always take the piss with him...

Also beat him by a mile in races.. donno why- think he just cant pace himself.

There is are times in the year that i hate riding with the bunch.  1 is around Argus time cause everybody think that they are a cyclist and you get people that causes crashes in the bunch.  Secondly around Tour de France cause then EVERYBODY thinks that they are a tour rider.  Just annoying really.

Dobby like some of these fellow hubbers say its all part of becoming stronger better and faster. Since I have started training with the sronger groups in my area my seeding index dropped which means the lower your index the better your starting position. You will benefit all the way. Like the Nike ad says..Just do it

Enjoy smiley2.gif
