I want to buy my son a Merida matts 40. But I'm not sure if I should take the V-brakes (shimano) or the cable Discs (tektro). Which is better?

Get the disk option but ask the bike shop to upgrade them to hydraulic at the same time (i.e. trade in the new cable disks), tell them nicely Wink that you will only buy the bike if they can do the upgrade at a reasonable price.

I still got V's on both my mtb's and they work just fine, but.... jeez every time i have to change pads i start seeing red....

Oh how the discussion twists and twirls:

Brakes in order of preference due to Stoppingpower;

- Hydraulic Rim brakes

- HYdraulic Disc brakes

- Vbrakes made by Shimano from Deore LX to XTR or Avid Single digit types

- Vbrakes by everybody else

- Cable disc brakes by Avid

- Cable disc brakes by every body else

For teh reasons I gave earlier, cable disc brakes are rubbish, try and steer clear of them.

Most entry level bikes sold with V-brakes, will have disc brake compatible wheels thrown in as part of the package. It's a marketing edge that all manufacturers have taken up so the upgrade is easy.

If the bike does not have these then it is probably cheaper than a set of disc brakes anyway so a new bike would be the way to go.

If we talk about the suitability of disc brakes we only talk about hydraulic disc brakes.

the mechanical advantage of cable discs is inferior to v-brakes.

Scotty I don't say a lot because there is not a lot to say these days but when a man of your wishdom makes a comment it prompts me to add something as well .

If I am not mistaken I think it was the Epic we had all that rain on day 1, even branches helped us stop.

Go with the cable discs not the best I admit but a step in the right direction.

Like a couple of other people have said at least your future upgrades will not be too limited and a move to hydraulics will not be as painful on the pocket as it could be if you had to buy a disc compatible wheel set.

The only gripe I had with them was that they squealed a lot and pretty much annoyed anybody that was riding with me.

Sorry Summit...Embarrassed
