Speed Devil Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 I think the organisers should get more creative and give out quality stationary, bottle openers, glasses, socks etc that is branded with the sponsor's names. Stuff that will be noticed at your next braai, when you use your pen/pencil at the office/client etc etcMedals just get chucked in the back of the cupboard until the day that they are thrown away or donated to some charity. T-shirts and the printing on them are usually of such low quality that they are half their original size after 3 washes and 2 wahes later the print starts coming off. Personally I think that medals should only be given on special occassions like after 5 or 10 finishes, something like they do with the ACT when you gat a pink number after completing 10 races. Maybe also for a special commemoration of a race and so.... GIVE US SOMETHING WE CAN USE!!! Just my 2c
Mighty Spoke Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 I still say if we have a medal thing it would be nice to have it like the comrades...split by time finishers getting different bronze' date=' silver or gold and finisher medals. I personally don't need a medal and would rather race for podium but as no.one.knows says, SA is big on funriders and we need to nurture that. [/quote'] I agree with WW, if there are medals, lets make them worth something, maybe based on times? Sub 2:30Sub 3:00Sub 3:30 Or top 10, top 100? Strive for a better medal?

Is it still the same then?

scotty Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 I say dump the medals & Tees and rather give value for money by dropping the high entry fees and rather give a more 'festive' type after-race hospitality area where families and friends can have a jol after a long & hard ride. ...and' date=' if it is a road race, rather spend it on more marshalls and or get Thinkbike involved where full road closure is not done!![/quote'] Spot on

owen62 Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 theres no choice of 'likes it'. I do. I got a sh*tload and like having them. Wont mind a T-shirt either. What really is useless is the patches. wtf are we supposed to with them??? I have a sh*tload of cycling T-shirts and medals!
dirtrider Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 What is your opinion on Medals at fun rides? They cost between R10 and R20 per medal(depending on the amount made)?and get dumped in a box somewhere in the garage a week after the event. Is there a way that event organisers can come up with something that is a better spend of money to give to finishers of funrides? ? Give me your ideas! It has become very clear to me that most of the people on the Hub got no idea what a R20 T-shirt looks like !!

Another one of those absolutely dumb@ss threads with contributions by mindless people who has never ever contributed by presenting a cycle race or managing a club for cyclists.
Shebeen Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I vote option 5. Medals are cool There are some other options however. Milkwood half marathon i got a yellowwood tree(sapling). At my event I would personally give out sandblasted shotglasses, and make people klap some witblitz with them. this callsign was earned.

Anything rather than another R20 T-shirt which is going to shrink, fade or disintegrate after the first wash.
Woofie Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 The poll doesnt allow for "we're happy with medals leave it as it is". ? So it's no good for gauging people's interest in medals. ? Ur only asking people about variations of your own opinion' date=' which is not to have them. ? How very socialist/nazi/sabc'ish ? ?[/quote'] I agree with Joe. Where is the section that says that we are happy with medals. I have my medals hanging up on a wall and I am proud of them. 3 years ago I did died a few times on my first 5 km cycle. Each time I do a race, even though they breeze by now, it is still an event that I am proud of doing. So what if the entry fee is 20 bucks more. Maybe then you will skip picking up the happy meal on the way home then! I actually get peeved at races that dont give medals and charge the same as races where you do get them. I love my cycling and I am proud to show it! That is why I like to have a momento. I dont really want a cheap R20 - R30 T shirt either, how bad is the quality going to be for that price.
Christopher Brunsdon Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I'm new to the scene and my opinion may/will change. For now, medals are for serious events and not for Sundae Cruizers. If I'm going to do the 20km Lourensford MTB then why should I get the same medal as the real guys who do the hair raising 60km trail? Thinks it is unfair to the guys that deserve medals. I want to do the Karro2Coast and for that I want a medal, but as mentioned if I do the Lourensford 20km then just give me a TShirt or even just a happy meal.
scotty Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I have a cupboard full of T shirts most still in plastic and I can only handle so many benoni world champ medals and no more, I only keep a few medals from boxing , rugby, running and cycling that meant something to me, hopefully if i complete it my 1st jock will join them. Other than that i just decline the medal when offered.
fiasm Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 it's a fun ride, not the olympics or national titles. Prizemoney or prizes are best IMHO
