That would be William !!!!

I am one of the lucky few it seems that can walk into any LBS and buy what I need . Don't have to worry about taxes ' date=' delivery and all that nonsense . And then I get to meet people , something a few on the hub should try !!!! Right Hog ?[/quote']

LOL

Not saying that every nut and bolt in his shop is cheaper than CRC, but for the stuff on my current shopping list, it is. Heck, its 10 minute walk from my place vs a 1-3 week online order.

Also there advice is often worth more than the online saving I could have got. Not knocking online stores as we need them - heck, I got my Camelbak for R500 from CRC vs > R1K locally - but my LBS has certain standards and would never sell anything as porno as my Scudo CB LOL

This is the Cape, not Gauteng. Our local Rastas have not yet gotten the Internet, so no online shopping for your favourite weed, gotta get down to busy corner ourselves. LOL

Someone hear the rumour that Solomons wants to open a huge bike shop in the Joburg area in the new future, something not before seen in SA?

Was again at my LBS this afternoon and we chated about prices. He knows he has to compete against CRC and his prices show it. Actually' date=' all the items I got prices for are cheaper to get from my LBS than CRC.Example: My LBS is charging R185 for 8 Speed Shimano chain (full SS) vs R230 CRC; Shimano 520 Pedals are cheaper locally and not just CWC than CRC;My LBS was even telling me about shocks on special at CRC, an email he recieved this morning. South African prices where R2500 cheaper!!!I will still use CRC to do pricing, but it looks like I will be buying all my goods locally Tongue also helps that I live next door to a cycling parts rep too.[/quote']

So who is the LBS .... ?

I'm not here to promote names, but you can check out who the Somerset West Moorewood stockist is!!! LOL

So the Boomslang Green Bike pimping Tyre guru all-round good guy out in Somerset west is stirring it up again .... well done to him.

BTW ... that is one of the best LBS's to get your bike serviced or to get some good honest advice from.

CRC has good prices on most itmes due to something called volume. More items less mark-up.

There warehouse space is apparantly the size of four rugby fields and they deal world wide.

So sometimes it will be impossible for a LBS to compete unless he give the stuff with no markup or basically nothing.

As for the distributors. .  its a bitch being one in SA the market is difficult and volumes small. Shipping cost duties etc all n pain in the ass.

I think it ultimately depends on what you buy.  I do believe in supproting the LBS, but what gets me is how they change their minds to make a sale, or at least that is what I find at the one I go to.

I've just bought the Exposure Mxx 2 from CRC, but that is also due to the fact that I know someone who is in the UK at the moment and can bring it with.  In that case, firstly it seems hard to find that item in SA and secondly I just don't know how the LBS will knock of 50% of a similar product to try and compete.

It a lot of cases thouh the smaler items aren't worth buying, due to the shipping costs involved, but as soon as you can get up to the required 3k and shipping is free, it will be worthwhile.

Supporting the LBS is still good, as long as they look after you and not just after their own pocket.

I have priced some items on CRC, converted the currency and added the extra Vat when it arrived. I took that price to my LBS and they matched it. And it was not a case of them having old stock, they had to order it from the supplier. So I do not know if they took made a loss or not, I just know that somewhere someone is taking us for a ride.

But as far as I know we do not pay tax on the cycling equipment, or at least that is what I read, from guys that order quite regularly.  Or do you pay VAT but not import tax?
