I couldn't help buying this bike, mainly just for the interesting gear shifters. No decals on the bike so I don't know what make it is. Must be Japanese as research shows that these Symmetric shifters mounted to a single braze-on boss similar to a water bottle mount, located on the top tube were used on Japanese bikes from 1982-83 (Bridgestone, Miyata, Shogun, Panasonic, Univega, etc). When this SunTour rear derailleur lever was moved, a cam on the inside of the shifter body also adjusted the trim on the front derailleur. I have not tested it so will have to see once restored. The bike needs some TLC.

I think that is my Colnago Master Arabesque that you are seeing in the back.

I was trying hard not to buy any more bikes this year but this old Cinelli was shouting out loud. The plan is to keep it in its weathered condition. Accept for the wheels and pedals everything seem to be original. It almost looks like the bike was wrapped in a foil like metal and then painted. The Magistroni crankset is really cool.

Any idea of its age?

Rumour has it that the bike was kept outside in the garden, but I am still trying to find out the full history.

Eppie, I also say it's 50's. There is a Cinelli register and you can check your serial number to get fairly accurate date. Unfortunately the keeper of the registry doesn't register any more bikes (I have tried to register two).

The nickel and chrome plating is shot so I wouldn't leave the frame in that condition. That's too much patina. Also it will just deteriorate further.

Nice find. They do weigh a tonne.

stolen from the net

1953  - Cinelli "fast-back" seat post bolt system introduced.

-----

1958  – Large paint-filled brass with silver-plate 56mm head badge discontinued, replaced by smaller paint-filled brass with silver-plate 51mm head badge.

-----

1959  – Unica-Nitor plastic saddle is introduced by Tommaso Nieddu of Turin, founder of Vittoria derailleur company.  Giotto (owns a plastics company) and Cino help with development and later Cino enters into partnership with Nieddu in 1962.

-----

1960  - Mod. S.C. referred to as "Super Corsa" in 1960 Ron Kitching catalog.

-----

1960  - Wolf-ear head tube lugs disappear on Mod. S.C. and Mod. B.

-----

1963  - Cinelli five-pin steel cranks (made by Magistroni); previously three-pin.

Very nice find though.

Measure the Head Badge and check the Head Tube lugs for a good date estimate. I can send you the whole Cinelli timeline if you want it.

If the Magistroni's are original, then my guess would be post 1963.

Thanks for the info. I would love to have a look at the timeline if you don't mind emailing it to me. I think you still have my address from the Impey article I sent you.

Thanks LC, I will be taking the frame to BMC to have a look at.

Hi Eppie, your serial number is dated between 1958 and 1961! Looking at the cranks it would probably dip into late 50’s.

Thanks Olffie.
