It's proberbly one way for Raleigh to cut costs. I mean is can not be cheap to give 15 people each a R30 000 bicycle.

I don't think that 15 bikes at R30 000 each is a lot of money when you compare Probike's sales.

There was an article in Ride or Bicycling on the Raleigh brand and they rekoned that Probike sold 3-400 000 bikes a year. That is a lot of bikes.

I think about BH for eg. They surely don't sell more than a handfull of bikes a month, but yet they can afford to sponsor Medsheme with their range topping bikes.

Excellent point. Especially considering that the BH bikes are frigging expensive and aren't available in most bike shops. You can also buy 'em on CRC.

Kevin probably could not believe his luck when pro bike started stocking scott. Immediately passed on the raleigh and took the spark to worlds. Volcan bikes comes from a much more reputable stable than raleigh..... pls........ If i am not mistaken it is manufactured by cervelo

I looked at the specs on their website - it seems like the top of the range bike in SA are not that light - the hard tail at 9.5kg and the Full suss at 10.5kg. Kevin Evans will put his bike on a diet probably.

Volcan bikes are not a Swiss made...they were just
picked off the shelf in a Chinese factory and Victor Momsen threw the decals
on them.

Good luck to the Volcan sponsors, hope they know
what they are getting themselves into? And Raleigh actually have a higher pedigree
then Volcan!

Raleigh has done a lot for the sport in this country, so we must
actually thank them! Clap

As far as I heard it was the sponser that canned the deal i.e. probike and not the other way round.

You see I've heard it was the other way round, But probike was going to can it first but got beaten to it...

Volcan is distributed by emotion cycling being Stuart Miller not Victor, Who has two wheels trading...

Hi guys,

just to make some things clear:

It was Probike's decision to discontinue the sponsorship. We had and still have a very good relationship to Doug Ryder and his team, but after many years Probike has decided to change their business and marketing strategies. There will be no team riding Raleigh bikes in 2010 as we don't see any better team to sponsor than MTN.

Just to give you some facts on Volcan:

1. Victor did the product management, but he is not the distributor.

2. Emotion Cycling (Stewart Miller) is the distributor in SA.

3. The bikes are not made by Cervelo. In fact Cervelo does not even have a frame factory. But they have the same distributor in SA.

4. I don't know much about the Volcan bikes, but 10.5 kg for a aluminium suspension bike actually is not too bad. And don't compare this weight to your carbon Specialized pimped with carbon wheels, etc.

I wish all the best to Doug Ryder and his team. Even though Kevin will not ride Raleigh next year I wish he will win the Cape Epic. And even though the road team will not ride Raleigh anymore I wish the will win a stage in a big European pro race and make it to the Tour de France some day.
