Bethlehem - A Free State cyclist died in an ambulance on his way to

hospital after hitting a pedestrian while riding his bicycle, police

said on Thursday.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said Petrus Motloung, 46, died while

being transported to Dihlabeng Hospital in Bethlehem from the

Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Hospital in Qwaqwa on Wednesday.

Motloung was riding his bicycle along the main road in Bohlokong when he bumped into the pedestrian.

"Apparently he fell off his bicycle, bumped his head against the ground and became unconscious."

An ambulance was summoned and Motloung was rushed to Dihlabeng Hospital.

"However he was transferred to the hospital in Qwaqwa for a scan

to his head and was on his way back to the Dihlabeng Hospital when he

died."

Mophiring said it was later found Motloung sustained a skull fracture as a result of the accident.

Just out of interrest, how many of you almost hit pedestrians while cycling.  I have had, in my years of cycling, quite a few close encounters.  Some just don't pay attention but some are quite deliberate as well.

I have hit two that I know off. What they were doing on the pavement I don't know. (pavements are for mtb's now that roads are only for cars) smiley2.gif

I have also had some close encounters and it mostly is because they will react in an unpredictable manner when they finally notice you coming!

I guess a good case for mounting a bell?

no, but they were all over the place, even after ringing the bell off. I may have shouldered others in passing without realising it.

ps I commute in the inner city often through taxi ranks.

haven't hit any pedestrians but have had some VERY close calls with car doors in Camps Bay! and that's not because i'm watching the bikinis on the beach either!

Talking about bells. Do you know that it is a requirement of the law that bicycles are fitted with bells? Just like it is compulsory to wear a helmut and to have a specified number and size of reflectors. Probably 90-95% of us are therefore breaking the law. I have yet to see a cyclist over the age of 10 with a bell on his bike

If you ride in the South, Mark Beneke, brother of Gary, has a bell which he uses often to keep the bunch in check!

It's amazing that a motorist will be totally blind when they turn infront of you, but then miraculously see when I give them the finger. The finger works better than a bell ever could. LOL
