Recommended Posts

Hi People

I have read some of the thread's in this power  forum Big%20smile Seen some people mentioning ftp test's Confused Can somebody explain in to me or point me to a url that explains it. I have read some long course triathlon book's and they normally just do the CP30 test.

By the way, ftp = file transfer protocol ? LOL

Cheers

I think you get it by doing a 20km TT, But you use the results from the last 10km to work it out, eg. the av of the last 10km is you FTP, i'M JUST GUESSING.

I do a 30 minute test then take the average of the last 20 to determine my FTP...

narra: You can then do those 20 minute intervals just below that zone to try & increase your power at threshold... Michelle2007-06-06 09:48:17

BTW, you can do this on an indoor trainer without a power meter, by using speed (if you have a sensor on your rear wheel)  bruce mentioned it the other day & he was spot on... the speed & power move almost perfect in sync...

they should since P = force x velocity

Nope ..... not quite as simple as that. You have to be sure that the trainer resistance is even across the speed band. Only having my own magnetic trainer to go by I can't confirm but I believe that with some (such as fluid trainers) the resistance is not linear.

I'm not sure that I would do an FTP test using speed as the quality of your training will depend on how well this value is determined.

Functional Threshold Power is the average power that you should be able to maintain for an hour. testing is usually done at shorter durations - typically 20k FTP is calculated as ave - 5%. I also believe that some people do the same thing with a 10k TT but subtract 10%.

Sure that Bikemax will have an opinion on this.

The only certainty with my FTP is that it is always too LOW!! LOL
