Windblown: it's for those reasons you listed et al, that prevents me from being suckered into the hype.

some are eternally optimistic cos they sitting pretty now and dumping a couple of grand on tickets and watching the worlds best footie is no brainer or them. For that type, FiFA is selling and they are buying. Everyone else to the contrary is a bunch of stuffy naysayers. Live for the moment and all that..

Then you get those who look at it holistically, and take into account the before, the occasion and more importantly, the after. Exactly how will the balance sheet look at the end of the day? How exactly are the proceeds divvied up, and thus who ultimately benefits the most. The long time benefits and disadvantages: well we cna wait for it, or learn from that which has gone before.

but lets get more tourists. we need the money. As if most of it goes into social upliftment and not private enterprise. I dont have issue with private wealth, but dont try to sell the whole nation on betterment for all when in reality the big dollars go back to either refilling empty government coffers (public works expenditure) or enriching further those who by influences scored the biggest contracts.

Now we have stab-proof vests! Come on. I hope whomever got onto this brain wave catches a cramp between his/her two big toes.

You have to laugh at this, though. Out of all the world's soccer fans, the English yobs who this is being marketed to are the ones most likely to get stabbed by someone (and the WC has nothing to do with this).

Hey, I have something positive to say.

When the rand strengthens as demand for it increases the months prior it is going to be great. Cause that's when I pull all my money offshore and move out of here. 1st world here we come!!!!!

I'm not negative so much as totally disinterested. That does not just apply to local football or the world cup(not sure I am allowed to say world cup). I dislike football and am starting to get irritated by football officials berating us for our lack of enthusiasm. What about the lack of enthusiasm I am seeing about young Impey riding for Radioshack? The way to promote and market something is not to denigrate the people that show little interest in your product but to make some effort to show your target market how great your product is. Don't expect me to just suddenly love football out of national pride.

yeah, i totally agree. i mean, we are said to be a soccer-loving nation, then how come the only games that are really well-attended are the soweto derbys.

I'm not interested in the World cup at all. The reason being I've never been interested in soccer. And I have also not attended one game of the rugby or cricket world cups. So it is not being negative about the Soccer World Cup.

What I however would have liked if there were any tours to this new stadiums to go and have a look inside as they all loo awesome. I hope maintenance will be good at these stadiums to keep them in good shape for years to come.

I photographed the Orlando stadium years ago, a rickety old affair and then shot it again the end of last year. I drove right past it not realizing that the magnificent new stadium alongside the modern bus station was Orlando. Inside it is fantastic. Has been well used and in great condition. Spotlessly clean.

While I have no interest in the world cup it does not imply that I hope it is a disaster, quite the contrary. HappyMartin2010-01-20 00:46:01

I do not want to be negative but the facts are ominous....... only 30% of the tickets for the Germany games agains Oz, Ghana and Serbia has been sold. The effect on our own economy will be devastating, think about those who took out bonds to improve accommodation in anticipation, money spent on improving infrastructure etc etc. Hpe this is NOT an early indication.

Even if you don't like football, its going to be an awesome event! Locals don`t have a clue about how big this is!

Looking forward, as I am going to 7 games in 10 days!!!

R140 for a group match is a bargain, as you pay R350 for a Trinations Rugby Test or Super14 Final....

me...i'm just looking forward to seeing some of those brazilian girls on a cold winters day in jhb. At least they will be able to point us in the right direction.

There are quite valid reasons why I think a lot of South Africans are not that happy about the fifa world cup here, including me. In fact, make me the #1?

Its really about national priorities. If we had a fully-functional efficient public service, social justice, an equatable society and something to show off, well then we could afford the luxury of such an event. But this is not the case, this is early days in the transformation of the country and I write this as a supporter and participant of the democratic revolution.

Just a few reasons:

-Public health services are appalling, only the rich can afford comprehensive medical insurances;

- Public Schooling and primary/secondary education is even a bigger mess. Teachers are paid a pittance, therefore who remains? Youth are the future. Once again only the rich can afford the decent ?private schools. Fundamental injustice.

-What a cock-up is the public transport issue? condition of roads, Gautrain, abortion of the Ria Viva scheme etc etc

-Do I have to mention Security?

-Land Reform is a total stuff-up due to incompetence and if its not sorted we are heading to a Zim style land grab that I can assure you.

etc etc?

Now soo much money has gone into developing infrastructure around the World Cup. Almost all public services have been told this is priority so eventhing else takes a back seat. For what? a game of football?

And so many Cap-Ex contracts out there that has spawned a new 'empowered' elite mainly through greasing palms by the old guard. And also who has benefited? The 'white' Civil Eng companies showing record profits and foreign contracters laughing all the way to their Swiss banks.

All whilst we sit here and watch the rot happening before our eyes.

Personally I dont watch footies on a regular basis, but always enjoy the World Cup on the box. But I am getting out of here for the entire period and will not be watching a thing as a personal protest, hoping to do a cycle tour of the Phillippines. ?

Of course we have a clue about how big this event is. we are not all living under a rock. I still don't care though. If I was given a ticket and a chauffeur driven lift to the stadium for the final I would still prefer to go for a ride at Suikerbos.

LOL I'm with Stretch on this one.... the only negative thing I've heard about the world cup is a rumor that my one mate heard that Alquaida might bomb the stadiums.. hope thats not true.

There are tours through the Durban stadium and of course the cable car ride to the top.

Would love to go and see Soccer City up here. So any one got contacts there...
