Would you buy a 900 lumens light for a race like the Trans Baviaans?

If I did races like that and it needs to be more then 1 a year, then I would not look any further then a Brighter Lights jobby.

Million dollar question then is which light system is the best on the market - taking weight' date=' beam, duration and ease of use into account?

in my experience, NightLightning

Lupine Betty 12. You'll take out a second bond on your house to buy one, but 6 hours at 1750 lumens... you'll win a 24 hour just by blinding the rest of the field.

I've got Exposure MaXx-D - fantastic light but cumbersome charger. Charge time is 8hrs!! Major issue for Freedom Challenge.

Also invested in Lupine Betty 14 - with extra batteries but charger unit is too bulky and quite heavy. Time on full tap is barely 3 hrs.

So neither of these 'top-end' systems is ideal - not to say they aren't both great light sets.

When you ride night after night and have limited space, and limited charge time you require something that addresses as many of these areas as possible - and I'm yet to hear anyone come forward with an emphatically decisive suggestion.  Clap MAYBE THERE IS NO SUCH SYSTEM!!

I've got a cuple of Nightlightning iBlaasts as well as my edison.

i use the iBlaasts most often.

Charge time is 3hrs

rn time is 5hrs on max bright

weight is a sliver over 600gr for battery and light.

i use it for camping, hiking, biking, even neighbourhood watch when its running.

it blaasts out around 1000lumen for that 5hrs too.

I find it more than ideal.

lots of set up scope too.

i have a sigma karma - for early morning raining rides it's perfect. i've used it for a 24 hour race before and loved it. but then in 2008 brighterlights lent one of his sets to the social hub team (of which i was a member) and to this day i long for those things. if i (when i) get a set of them i'll most probably try attach them to the motorbike and the car Wink

I'm busy building a light that should push out 1500 lumens and last 4hrs on full power.

Eish! I hope it'll have a dimmer switch, or you'll make yourself very unpopular at the night race.

I get complaints with my Honk Kong job on soft beam!

I have a Hope Vision 1. It came with all the dooh-dahs to mount on helmet / bar.

Batteries (4 x pen lights) go into the unit itself, so it becomes a bit heavy on the head - but I got used to it. You just need to see to it that your helmet is on TIGHT.

4 beam settings (MAX is not much more than HI... which gives ~ 6 hrs. What is great is that you charge 4 extra NI-Mhs, keep them on you somewhere, and you are good to go for the whole night.

It gives plenty of light, maybe not wide enough for the liking of some, but I can't see that you'd want more... Ok, maybe the adventure version for the head, and this one on the bar then smiley2.gif

The Magicshine lights certainly deserve a mention here.

Weight: 330g

Beam: General consensus is that it has a great beam pattern.

Duration: 3hrs on High & 5hrs on Low

Ease of use: Very easy to mount & operate

Now if you wanna add price to the list of criteria, then I would go so far as to say that the Magicshine will trump them all.

And you can double your output or runtime by simply getting 2 of them - you will still come in at way under the cost of the high end lights.

I must add that these other lights that have been mentioned in this thread certainly are great lights if price is not a major consideration. Especially Brighter-Lights, they really are good and compare favorably with the big brand lights on the market, and they are designed and manufactured locally.

I have been riding with Ay-up for the last 2 years and they are brighter than anything else I have seen on the road or MTB trail smiley16.gif. Bear in mind I am not a night racer and I want them mainly for early morning and late afternoon / evening riding with occasional night rides and races.

The standard battery (about half the size of a cell phone) lasts 3 hours, and the extended battery lasts 6 hours ? all at full power with no noticeable diming at all. The dual beam light (which is a Cree LED) and battery is light enough to be mounted on your helmet while riding and I have yet to see anything that comes close to that light output for the weight. The beams are totally sealed and can be submerged under water so they are perfect for anything you will encounter on the trail.

I recently bought a 3rd light as well as a new 3 hour battery that can both dim to double run time as well as flash - the flashing is good for mounting the light facing backwards and fitting red caps onto it as a "car flasher" for road riding. I normally ride with 1 light on the bars (wide beam) and a narrow beam on the helmet so it shines exactly where I am looking - that is enough light to get you through ANYTHING including very technical MTBing and would last 3 hours at full power. The charge-time is also impressive and while I have not measured it, I would guess it would be about 2 hours maximum for the std battery pack ? the charger that ships with the units I got can charge 2 batteries simultaneously.

You can see more info on their www site www.ay-up.com.au and there is a guy importing them to SA www.easygis.co.za

AY-UP Lights

Dont look anywhere else. I have a set of these lights and it will solve all your problems.

It comes with a number of battery's ranging from 3 - 6 hrs on full power. There is also a NEW dimmer option. So it will be perfect for every night ride. Who needs a lights that can last for 90hrs?

The quality of the beams are great, nothing really compares. 10 Year warranty.

The Charge time is +/- 2hrs from flat.

They are super durable and really easy to use. 56 grams weight and it doesnt feel like you have anything on your head and super bright.

So the great thing is that it comes with 2 x 2 sets of lights. In effect 2 for your bars and 2 for your helemt.

Splashout if you are gonna buy lights buy there. They are really the ones to get.

It also comes in a super cool Orange Box.

I got them from the guys in South Africa. Great service, support and after market accessories, salesetc. EASYGIS

Anyone run the Ayup (Australian) lighting systems and have constructive feedback as to the spec and general quality of their products?

Main considerations would be:

Overall weight' date=' quality of light beams, battery life, charge time, durability and ease of use. For Freedom Challenge type conditions.

Any info would be appreciated.

with the Ayup's you get 4 leds, some rather dangerous battery's and a box....

I think I'll stick to my Nightlightning's or Lupines thanks
